The Washington Post did a good article on it in the last year- I know it was in the last 11 months because I went to Zion the middle of last Oct. and it was after my trip. You might want to try to get it in the www.washingtonpost.com travel archives.

just returned from the green valley spa. the rooms were beautiful but they had a cockeroach problem. owner was rude in handling the problem, went there for rest and relaxation and went away early with more stress. been going to spas for years never had an experience like this. i would not recommend this spa to anyone, told us to stay at the downtown marriott if we did not like the rooms. Is that the way to treat guests?

The statement that we treated her and her friends ("the group") very poorly is not true. This group stated that they found cockroaches in their room. The group had 2 rooms right next to each other. Their 2 patios connected to each other and we found that this group would leave their back patio French doors open. To us, this invites any type of creature or bug to enter into the rooms. Yes, we always spray a natural, eco friendly bug spray outside to keep the bugs away. But, if you leave your doors open, the bugs will run from the sprayed area outside to the rooms inside. The group explained to us what had happened, without seeing the bugs, we offered each of the four friends a free upgrade to each of their own Grand Suite. These rooms are twice as big as their previous room and are normally $255 more per night/per person. We did not want to upset them by suggesting that by keeping yours doors closed, that this would keep the bugs out of the room. We also knew that the Grand Suites did not have the layout as the Junior suites and did not offer a French door that could be left open. They declined the upgrade , but they did accept our offer for a free treatment for each of them. The following day, our housekeeping staff informed us that the two rooms, belonging to the group again were leaving their patio French doors open. That morning they also called over to housekeeping and asked for 4 more arrival set-ups (value$50 each), which is placed into
the rooms prior to each guest’s arrival. We declined this. Soon after, The group then came over to the Resort Center and asked to speak with our General Manager, Mike Rice. Mike and the owner, Alan Coombs did meet with them. The group said that they had found another bug. Why did this group not say anything about the bug, while demanding more set-ups? Mike offered to go over and look at the bug and to clean it up, but the group said that they had disposed of it already. They also had decided that they did not want the free treatment and wanted monetary compensation. They asked that they be given a free night, meals and treatments or they would write a letter to the Spa Finder Company, which recommends various spas to the public. Our owner declined this offer/threat. By the way, this group did write to Spa Finders, which we found damaging. Our owner knew that we could not make this group keep their doors shut and that a bug could enter into the rooms. We would rather our guests stay and we do not wish they depart unhappy. This group said that they could not be happy unless we accommodated their free nights. Alan told them that he would not comp their stay and that they were welcome to depart if they chose, without having a penalty. If a guest chooses to leave early, guests will forfeit their initial deposit (see registration card and confirmation). These guests were welcome to stay and were not forced to depart. They declined our offers for free upgrades and treatments. The group was only charged for the 2 days they stayed here and participated.

I live in Utah and find this posting very strange. Our extremely dry desert climate makes it very rare for any home, business, etc. to have a serious, persistent "bug" problem of any kind. It's just too dry for them! We don't really even have fleas.

If there is a temporary problem, such as unwanted hitchhikers coming in with a guest's luggage, it is usually quicky solved with spray. I find it hard to believe that additional bugs were coming in from the open doors.

I've never been to the spa and probably won't ever, but I just don't get this one.

Daylw--Thank you for mentioning that. I have been to Red Mountain Spa in St. George and never seen any bugs there, even outside on the grounds, so I wondered about another place in the same general area having cochroaches. But I don't live there, so can only comment as a visitor.

MMS,

Not that we don't have our share of insects, what do you think all those lizards are for anyway?

ehansen, are you with the Green Valley Spa in some capacity? I find it odd that you would find this post.

I stayed at one of the Las Palmas condos for all of September (last month), which is right next to the Green Valley Spa. I was always around the spa grounds and pool areas. There is NO cockroach problem. In the whole month I was there, I did see one dead one that was outside near our patio. One dead cockroach does not constitute an infestation that dsled007 thinks they had. I noticed our condo had about 3 cans of bug spray in various cupboards, but we never had any problem with bugs. I am assuming that the spray is there just in case something does get in should a door be left open like ehansen said. Also, I am assuming there might be more bugs come winter season there when the weather gets cooler and the bugs are looking for a more warmer place to live?
