A Pink Jeep tour and daytrip to Sedona? The Heard Museum (wonderful Indian art and Kachina dolls) Drive up to the Navajo Trading Station and let her shop for Navajo silver jewelry (some very inexpensive and appropriate to a 10 year old) Do book a nice hotel with a good pool because it's going to be HOT! Enjoy.

I agree to pick a hotel with a fantastic pool area....I think The Pointe at Squaw Peak would fit the bill and be considered at the top of the list. Look for their website for pictures. We have a wonderful science and technology museum downtown and it includes an IMAX theater...all hands on and loved by kids of all ages. And ,while you are downtown, Arizona Center is a great place with quality touristy shops and restaurants. The Phoenix Zoo is alot of fun. Shopping at Scottsdale Fashion Park, huge with loads of smaller shops, flanked by alot of the large dept. stores. It is going to be very, very hot and you may wilt long before she does, so getting out in the mornings and hitting the pool in the p.m.(with loads of sunscreen) might be best.

Phoenix in JULY? I think everyone has the best advice - STAY AWAY!!! The temperatures will EASILY be around 115F... go north like to Sedona and obviously the Grand Canyon... but I'll repeat what I said about Phoenix - STAY AWAY.

Gerri, this is really, really tough. I am originally from Arizona, and if you are not used to the heat, it is really hard to take. Heck, it's hard to take even if you are used to it. I usually return every summer, but the family and I do things like go to the library and mall. Anything to stay in the air conditioning. Any chance you can change to San Diego? How many days will you be in Phoenix?

Anyway, the suggestions you have received so far are about the best you can do in July in the heat. I will add you might try to take in a baseball game, as I believe the stadium is enclosed. I guess you can also see movies and wander shopping malls. Maybe call your hotel and see if they have any more ideas.
