Grand Canyon South Rim/Sedona

Going to Sedona-GC early April for 6 days. - 3 adults, 1 teen. We will be doing easy hiking, possibly an easy raft ride, and jeep tours that are mild. Would like to go to Monument Valleyand possibly go on Raft Ride in Page, Should we try to visit Canyon de Chelly or Petrified Forest National Park? We would like to catch as many highlights of the area as possible. We realize there is a lot of driving time involved. Any suggestions to help us plan? Thanks.

Does the 6 days include Sedona and GC or just the time after?

As to I would go to Canyon de Chelley it you are interested in Native American History, and take a private tour into the Canyon with a Navajo guide. CdC is a Navajo park and only a small portion is open for visiting without a Navajo guide. If you are not going to spring for a guide, then it would only take a few hours to visit it and you might be able to drive through the Petrified forest/painted desert NP. Be aware that the petrified trees are laying on the ground, not standing up but there are some very nice petroglyphs and easy hiking opportunities there.

While you are in the Page area, go to Antelope Canyon and take a tour as well as the walk out to view Horseshoe Bend and the Best Dam View all easily done in less than a day. The smooth water raft trip from Page goes through Horseshoe Bend on the way to Lee's Ferry.

For the planning, get a paper map and highlight the areas you want to visit. Then go to maps.google or mapquest and enter destinations, using the add a destination feature. This will give you an idea on distances and driving times.

Have a great trip.

Canyon de Chelly is definitely worth the effort but Petrified Forest NP no so much. If you go to CdeC, book a room at the Holiday Inn and arrange your jeep tour there too.

If you have to choose between Monument Valley and CdeC, pick CdeC.

Right now, we are planning on arriving in Sedona approx. 5:00 p.m. or a little later on Sunday and will need to be back in Phoenix by the next Saturday night to catch the plane for home fairly early Sunday morning. This is our first trip to Arizona and are not sure which beautiful sights to see, which tours to go on or even which lodging to pick. We are looking at the guides and planning as quickly as we can. Thanks for your help.
