arizona trip - is this too much to do?
Hi all, appreciate your help with this one is advance...
We are going to arrive in Flagstaff, drive to Canyon de Chelly, then, drive to Monument Valley, then to S. Rim of Grand Canyon, then down to Sedona. We will have only one FULL day in each.
How far is CDC from Flag?
Would you skip anything or add to this list if you had the choice? THANK VERY MUCH!

I must agree----spend two days at grand and 2 at Sedona...otherwise you're simply doing a drive by and missing the whole point of seeing part of this country. slow down, relax and enjoy...you'll know when to return to see more.....you simply should not rush to see it all while missing everything you set out to see! Good luck---and consider the best suite you can buy at El Tovar at the grand canyon for one night! GL

From Flagstaff to Canyon de Chelly is 220 miles. You can see many of the over looks in one day. The best overlook is at the end of the south rim.
From Canyond de Chelly to Mounment Valley is 105 miles. You can drive there and still have time to see Monument Valley.
From Mounument Valley to the S. Rim of the Grand Canyon is 200 miles. Make sure you take the turn outs from Desert View to the Visitor Center. I don't know if you will have enough time to ride the shuttles on the West Rim Road that evening but I would recommend doing this the next morning before heading to Sedona.
Grand Canyon to Sedona is 117 miles.
It all sounds do able to me.
The only thing I would skip would be Sedona and spend the time either at the Grand Canyon or take a guide tour into Canyon de Chelly. You can only go down in the canyon with the guide tour but it was really a scenic and educational experience.

I think you are on the right track...we have taken this type trip many times with a full day in each area. We leave Phoenix early in the a.m., take the Monument Valley p.m. tour, next day go to Canyon de Chelly and take the p.m. tour and head to the Grand Canyon the next a.m. and down to Sedona, via Flagstaff, the last day. While staying a bit longer in Sedona, and possibly Grand Canyon, I think you'll be fine for this trip.

I have done a similar trip twice as follows.
Day 1. From Flagstaff to CDC is about 215 miles. If you leave Flagstaff early in the day consider stopping at Petrified Forest NP for a few hours. If you arrive at CDC with some daylight hours left drive the south rim stopping at the overlooks.
Day 2. Take a full day or half day truck tour. If you do the half day spend part of the afternoon hiking to the WHite House Ruins. This is the only trail you can walk without a Native American guide. Check at the VIsitors CEnter to see if a ranger guided tour to the WHite Hose Ruins is being offered. Leave CDC in late afternoon or early evening and head for Monument Valley. CDC to MV is 135 miles, Overnight in Kayenta or at Gouldings.
Day 3.. Take a full day or half day truck tour or do one of the three hour jeep tours available in the parking lot near the Visitors Center. You can see much of what is of interest in half a day. If you
get an early start and spend only half a day at MV you could be on your way to Gr. Canyon after luncn. It is 175 miles to Gr. Canyon Village. You enter the Gr. Canyon through the east entrance so stop at all the overlooks on the east rim drive. Overnight at GR. Canyon or in Tusayan about 10 miles from the South entrance.
DAy 4. Take the shuttle bus that does the west rim and hike down a bit of the Bright Angel trail. Rule of thumb - for every hour down figure 2 hours up. At end of day head for SEdona about 125 miles away.
Day 5. Explore SEdona and consider taking one of the jeep tours

I agree with the last few posters. The trip is very possible, and will certainly be enjoyable. It all depends on what YOU are looking for. If you want more of a relaxing trip, then certainly just choose two and relax! But if your goal is to get an overview, a 'taste' of the region, you can certainly do it all.
Definitely try to stay at Gouldings in Monument Valley! Truly a stunning location -- and be CERTAIN to get up for the sunrise!! You will NEVER forget it!
A Pink Jeep tour in Sedona will give you a good look at the area and is lots of fun.
BTW, every time we've stopped at the Grand Canyon, a ranger has told us this: the average time spent there by a tourist is 45 minutes. Unless of course, you hike to Phantom Ranch. The point they make is that you CAN see much of it from the look out points. IMHO, I would rather see it that way and have additional time to see other areas......for example the extraordinary Bryce and Zion Canyons.
Have a great trip! Take your sunscreen!
