Grand Canyon from Scottsdale in One Day
I'm planning on visiting the Grand canyon from Scottsdale and returning that same day rather than spending the night there. What part of the Grand Canyon should one see if they only had a few hours to visit the park and what is the best and quickest route to take?

You really want to spend over 8 hours in a vehicle driving only to have a short time at the Grand Canyon.:-\
The fastest way is to take I-17 up to Flagstaff and then I-40 to Williams and then Hwy 61 up to Grand Canyon Village Visitor Center. This is 235 miles and will take about 4 hours driving 75 MPH on the Interstates.
I would come back by driving east on Hwy 61 towards Cameron. There are scenic overlooks to stop at all the way to Desert View. This route is more scenic than the one you came up on. You see a lot of painted desert. Take Hwy 61 to Hwy 89, then go south to Flagstaff and pick up I-17 back down to Scottsdale. This route is 260 miles and will take about 4 1/2 hours not counting any stops you might make.
I would highly suggest spending the night at the canyon so you have time to ride the shuttle buses out to Hermits Rest and see the views in this area.

We have made day trip from Scottsdale to GR Canyon twice, leaving not too early and getting back before supper. Found it worthwhile. Did not hike to bottom of canyon, of course. Walked along it leisurely, lunch at lodge, had time for short nature walk with guide.
Ithink we got there about 11a.m. and left before 5 p.m.

Enter the park through the East Entrance by driving up rt. 89 to Cameron. Stop at the various viewing points on the East Rim on the way to G. Canyon Village. Then take the shuttle bus to view the west rim. When you return walk around the Village if you have time. Then exit the Canyon through the South Entrance

I work in the tourism industry in Arizona and one day trips to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix are the most popular day trip. Hundreds take the trip every year. Any time at all in the park is worth it. We are talking one of the wonders of the world.
