We are beginning to plan a Grand Canyon float trip for Spring or early Summer 2008.
I would appreciate any observations good and bad about the different outfitters that run the canyon and some observations about the different iteneries and lengths of trips.
Also, any observations about the timing of the trip (spring or summer) would be appreciated. Our general thinking is to go before school is out to avoid a boat (and campsite) full of kids. However we want it to be warm enough that we can enjoy the water.
This will be a once in a lifetime trip, so cost really isn't an object.

HI Spokaneman,
It sounds like you are planning a private trip? I assume you are aware that it is extremely difficult to get a permit? Also, the Grand is not a float trip. It's very serious whitewater rafting, Class V.

Oops, sorry, I see you are looking for outfitter recs. Western River Expeditions is one of the best. Moki Mac River Expeditions is also very good and somewhat less $$. Both have been running the Grand for many, many years.
The very large J boats are motor powered. Least likely to capsize.
Smaller rafts or oared trips are slower and much more EXCITING....

I will add that we were at the bottom of the canyon last year, mid-April, and the weather was perfect---low 90's during the day. The people in the rafts that made a brief stop at Phantom Ranch all seemed to be having a wonderful time.
But it was way too cold to swim---we tried.

I was referring to the air temperature. I wouldn't like to have to wear a dry suit for a full week
