Good restaurant in Topeka, KS

Will be spending one night in Topeka, KS. Any suggestions for a nice evening meal? Not a super pricey place. Maybe $15 per person. And something that's not a chain. midwestpatty

Blind Tiger Brewery had some good food and beer, though the facilities could use some updating. If memory serves, Boss Hawgs had some good BBQ, though I heard a rumor it may have declined after a change of ownership. There are a ton of Mexican restaurants in Topeka, though I don't know which are local and which are the better ones. You may want to "Yelp" the city.

If you get a chance, tour the capitol. The state spent a fortune renovating it and it is considered one of the nicest in the country. FWIW, there is a small history museum on the west end of town that makes for a nice/short visit if you need a break from the road. Similarly, the zoo is also decent if you want to stretch your legs (it isn't as big as many zoos seem to be).

Bradley's Corner Cafe has good chicken fried steak and fabulous pies (over 25 varieties).

Speck's Bar & Grill is a neighborhoood tavern with good chicken fried steak, fresh cut french fries & chips, Rocky Mountain oysters, and hamburgers.

It's steak country - go get you one.

Does the $15 include tax, tip and drink? That's pretty low for eating anything approaching a "nice evening meal" at a non-fast food place.

Perhaps surprisingly, I don't think Topeka has a lot of non-chain steakhouses anymore. Years ago they had the imaginatively named "topeka steakhouse," the Plantation steakhouse, which I think was waaaay up north -- I'm pretty sure I went there in the 70s visiting relatives -- and the North Star. A quick search indicates the North Star is still around but maybe is a bit run down. I think I went there once in the 90s and at the time was known for its very professional waiters.

Will be interested in where you end up. I like Topeka. It has really been doing some interesting things in the last 15 years or so. I think I mentioned this on another thread, but they have a kind of quirky arts district (aren't all arts districts quirky).

I'm sure no one is following this, but I heard Boss Hawgs closed (I referenced it above, but it since closed).
