I have an idea.... Why don't you smokers/non-smokers go find a website for the purpose of argument and state your feelings there. Leave this site to travel information with the kind of questions Marian was asking in the first place.

I didn't know that "live" and "smoker-friendly" can go together. Isn't that a redundancy?
I also cannot believe that any "intelligent" human could still praise smoking, much less support that mortal habit.
Is there intelligent life out there??

As James posted earlier, Rhode Island is still pretty sensible about this stuff. Has a kind of "leave it up to the owner" attitude; which is how it should be--no reason for fascist attitudes. (Evidently James doesn't realize it, but there are plenty of restaurants here that don't allow smoking at all, even at their bars; no need for legislation!) Most of the people I know in this area believe bar owners should be the ones to decide, based on what most of their patrons want. And it seems to actually work. Of course, we're getting transplants around here too; they seem far less tolerant of letting people figure these issues out for themselves. I suspect that RI is in line for something antismoking; but I think it will be "generational" as far as bars go. As in, I couldn't imagine such legislation happening any time in the foreseeable future.

But then again . . . it's amazing what has happened in some places. Like Maine. Hard to believe.

It also seems ridiculous, especially when commonsensical approaches, like Jill's, would likely make everyone happy. We all do things that pose a hazard to ourselves and/or others. Life is simply a hazardous endeavor. I'm not trying to justify smoking, and would never advise anyone to start. But still, nobody should be self-righteous about this stuff, because when the last smoker passes away, there's still gonna be loads of hazards to contend with. In fact, when people are done kicking around the last smoker, they may freak out at the incredibly hot summers they're having in January, and the fact there aren't any tigers or elephants or orangutans left in the wild, and the fact that they don't feel comfortable even bathing in tap water anymore; and they may light up an old tobacco leaf while pondering over it all. You never know . . .

James also mentioned that his friend had a drop in business during the summer; well, maybe his friend should advertise. There are still plenty of folks left in the city on summer weekends to fill a bar.

Hey James, where is your friend's bar? (My friends and I are always on the look-out for new places around Providence.)

Wherever you end up, Marian, best of luck. (Ever think of opening a bar in Portugal?)
