good deli
We are coming to NY this week and I would like some good deli food.I do not consider a place like Carnegie Deli any more than a tourist trap. Can someone tell me where the good smoked whitefish and pastrami are?

For Pastrami, the best I hear is at Katz's Deli in the Lower East Side, somewhere by the Williamsburg Bridge. I believe its on 2nd Ave. Someone may be able to help you with the exact location, or you can try checking the yellow pages online.

Katz is at 205 E. Houston Street, at the corner of Orchard Street (just east of 1st Ave). You can take the F or V train to Second Avenue.
BTW, we pronounce Houston "HOUSETON", not like the name of the city in Texas. I believe it goes back to the old Dutch pronunciation.
Russ and Daughters is at 179 E. Houston, btw Forsyth & Eldridge.
While you're in the neighborhood you can check out Yonah Shimmel for a knish at 137 E. Houston, btw Bowery & Chrystie (2nd Ave). Not far away at 367 Grand Steert, btw Essex and Norfold, is Kossar's for a Bialy. They also make a nice bagel.
Now that you're on Grand Street you're in Chinatown, and...
Have fun!!!
