Golden Gate Park San Francisco

Hi, am putting my final touches to our plans for San Francisco (leaving UK next Sat).I have a few questions but I will post them separately.
On Sunday we are planning the guided tour of the Haight in the morning and thought we would explore GG Park in the afternoon, taking advantage of the fact that it will be traffic free. I cannot work out from the Park website if the shuttle bus is still running, nor its hours of operation - I know it was experimental. As we would like to see the length of the park down to the Beach Chalet we are debating shuttle or bikes. There seem to be several bike rental outlets at Stanyon etc all presumably much the same but we would have to return the bikes to pick up and as none of them have websites I don't know what time they close. Can anyone local talk me through the logistics of bike versus shuttle (if one exists). Many thanks!

Hi, I am just topping my question, this may be a bit naughty but I have had such excellent replies to all my other questions and this one seems to have fallen through the cracks. I have emailed the park just asking about the shuttle (the info on website just talks about the shuttle to end of 2005) but they havent replied.

Biking would be the way to go, although you should realize that the return trip will be pretty much uphill.

I can't find anything that confirms one way or the other whether the shuttle is running in 2006. But I have some recollection of seeing it this year, although that may have been in connection with an event at the DeYoung. I would confirm when you arrive that it is still running and plan on renting bikes if it is not. Here are some places that used to rent--you can check their hours when you get here:
Golden Gate Park Bike and Skate: 3038 Fulton St., (415) 668-1117
American Cyclery: 510 Frederick St. and 858 Stanyan St., (415) 664-4545
Avenue Cyclery: 756 Stanyan St., (415) 387-3155
Park Cyclery, 1749 Waller St., (415) 221-3777
