going to LA this weekend
Greeting and Salutations! 3 girls going to LA and looking to have a fabulous time.
We like to dance, but nothing too clubby.
We would prefer to go to a bar.
And if you could recomend a few hot restaurants. How is Asia de Cuba?
We usually go out in New York and Philadelphia and people get pretty dressed up. Is LA really more casaul at night?
We will be there Saturday until Tuesday.
Any good flea markets on Sunday mornings?
Would like to know of a good coffee/breakfast place on Sunday morning, I will be on my own for part of Sunday and need to kill some time. Is Melrose the best place for shopping, and if so between what streets. Is the Ivy on Robertson a good place to go for lunch on Saturday? We like to people watch.

hg,
LA is huge. Where are you staying?
The Ivy is lovely, very upscale. Also, good shopping on Robertson.
(Des Habitudes, Agnes b.,etc)
Melrose has become quite commercial, but it's still busy. I would try Melrose WEST of Fairfax for a better shoping experience ( Daryll K., Prada, Miu Miu, Fred Segal). OR Beverly Boulevard, West of Labrea ( Richard Tyler, Diaviolina Shoes, Eduardo Lucero)
The Farmers' Market is a great place to kill time and have breakfast. It's busy on Sunday. Try Kokomo's for breakfast or the French creperie. The Market is on Third and Fairfax.
There's a flea market in the parking lot of Fairfax high school ( Fairfax and Melrose). I think it's on Sunday.
As for dancing, what kind? If you like swing, try the Derby on Los Feliz and Hillhurst in the Los Feliz section of town. People do get dressed-up, often in period style. They offer instruction, too. Very popular.

Hi HG,
Welcome to LA. First of all check out www.laweekly.com
For a list of all clubs, what the crowd is like, cover, type of music, dress etc.
Secondly Asia de Cuba is Terrific! $$$$ good luck if you intend to get into the Sky Bar.
The Asia De Cuba is on the Sunset strip and people there on the weekends dress up not formal but trendy.... I would say "meat markety" if you know what I mean.
Also check out www.lainsider.com for top 10 lists of b-fests and restaurants.
Best people watching IMHO is 3rd street promende in Santa Monica or Hollywood Blvd. near the Mann's Chinese.
Best flea market without having to drive all the way to Pasadena is at Fairfax Highschool parking lot on Sunday in the AM. (Red Hot Chili Pepper's went to Fairfax High) it's like, a one or 2 dollar cover charge.
Melrose is really fun for shopping, of course it's commercial.. and IMHO too expensive.
La Brea has the best vintage clothing stores, in between Santa Monica Blvd and 3rd Street!
have fun.

Asia de Cuba is fantastic. As far as getting into SkyBar, call to get on the list and when you leave a message let them know there are 3 girls out for girls night - that always gets us on the list.
For Sunday Brunch - I recommend the Hotel Bel Air, $40 pp but well worth it - the food is fabulous and your champagne glass is never empty.
Enjoy LA!!!!

Thyra, not horribly expensive. I think latkes are around $8 or so, about the same for salami and eggs, served with bagel and sass. Oh, now you've gone and made me hungry.
A warning, though. On Sat/Sun AM expect to wait, maybe even outside. Also I'd like to mention to the WHOLE WORLD that we had stuff ripped off from our car in the attended parking lot just north of Nate 'n Al's (please leave us your keys and, oh, maybe your camera or briefcase, too...thanks.) It's run by the City of Beverly Hills, go figure.

hg,
Farmers' Market is open, yes, there is construction going on , but they have parking assistants to direct you to a spot. The parking on the weekend is no worse than any other popular place in LA, that is to say, awful. It's a great place to kill time, people watch, have lunch or breakfast. It's also very close to Third Street in LA which has some good boutiques ( Polka Dots and Moonbeams-both vintage and modern is one of the better ones).
