Going to Kauai

Okay, so Kal and others have almost convinced us to go to Kauai. Am I right in thinking since a)we have a toddler and b) we're going in March/April that we should stay on the south side of the island? We're thinking resort now, rather than condos. Any suggestions? The dh wants to spend about $1000 for 7 nights, although we can afford more (and I'm trying to think of ways to convince him of that.)

Thanks!

Gwen, we are planning a trip with a toddler too-- but for the summer. On other travel forums, several people have recommended the Hyatt to us. They say it is beautiful with a lot of interesting things for toddlers- toddler pools and so on. I think it is pricey, but if that's not a problem, you might take a look. Also, a guide book on family travel we have mentions the Sheraton as being nice- again with a good beach for toddlers as well as a toddler pool . I don't have any first hand knowledge, but maybe this will help.

I'm also a little worried about the flight time with a toddler. Let me know if you have any good strategies there.

Have a good vacation.

Gwen that is the rainy time on the North Shore the best piece of Kauai. My favorite place but in August. The south side is sunny but also dry so there is not a lot of green. Just a thought I would consider Maui with the small one.
for that time of year.

Was in Kauai in September. Stayed in Poipu, thought everything was green. Visited the north shore as well. Green there too. Another nice place besides the Hyatt was the Marriott and it's in a nice bay with a long stretch of protected beach. Nice for a toddler.
How old is your toddler? We took our kids to Maui when they were 3 and 7. They were fine on the plane. Flew from the west coast. Good luck.

Alohaaa Gwen,
Kauai? That rat hole!?
Are you crazy? ;^D

While we can't give you toddler info (we're DINKs) you are better off playing the odds by staying in the SoShore-Poipu area for the weather in Mar/April.

In general, weather is pretty hit and miss when it comes to rain. That's why they call it The Garden Isle, I guess.

We were there from 12-30 thru 1-16-02 and got rained on once...and that was on the west end of the isle while golfing.
We had friends go over on 1-19ish for 10 days and they told me it rained almost every day! We've had people go over in July and won't go back since it rained for the 5 days they were there?!?!

As Holly mentions, the Sheraton would be a nice pick especially if they have some specials that may include air, rental and rooms-meal. It is a nice beach there and in Ap/May you may see some of the last tardy whales headin' home. They come in close there since the beach drops off around 20yds out.
Embassy has specials from time to time. No beach close by, tho. Great little pool area. Good for a toddie.

If no specials, I'd try a condo in Poipu down by The Beach House restaurant (on the way to Spouting Horn.) There is a nice little beach right there. Great snorkeling and small and sheltered enough for kids. Kuhio Shores and Lawai Beach are right there along with the Prince Kuhio.

As you know, I can go on about K but I'm still battling the "I wanna go back to Kauai NOW-don't wanna work" blues.
Call me "BB Kal" cuz I got da blues!
Back to Da Grind, sistah.

And now somebody has posted something about Chicago Deep Dish pizza! We're set to go there in August but I could use a Gino's East or a Lou Malnati's combo right now.
Any other Qs, feel free.
Mahalo,
Kal

Hi We too are going to Kauai at the end of March with a 3 yo. We just booked 3 nights at the Hanalei Bay Resort for a total of $119. We will rent a car and if it is rainy head south. Since we are saving so much money on the 3 nights we will stay the fourth night at someplace more expensive.

What hotel would folks suggest?

The Hanalei Bay Resort is running a special- 3 nights for $119. We found it on their web site and then called them- 800-827-4427. Just ask for the 119 for 3 nights special.
