are you sure you mean Godiva? These are made by Campbell Soup Co. and while fine chocolates, they are available almost everywhere in the country.

There are some lovely Belgian chocolatiers in New York. Someone will thing of the name I mean, begins with a T. that sells lovely chocolates in great decorative packages along the retail corridor to Rockafeller Center. Toscher? Something like that. Many other lovely ones as well.

These aren't Belgian chocolates but the finest chocolates in NYC are Teuscher, a Swiss company. The store is in Rockefeller Plaza across from Saks near Fifth Avenue. Lovely packaging with many options. Belgian chocolate would have to be from Neuhaus. They have a direct sale web site but you can probably find them at Bergdorf's across from the Plaza. The Godiva shops chocolates are made in the US with the exception of the occasional candy especially imported for specific promotions. You can ask at the store but this year it is the little chocolate champagne corks for their Millenium packaging. Chocolate is not my business, I'm just a dedicated consumer. You can order all this off the net but it will be much more fun to buy in person in New York. Have fun.

In my opinion, Godiva chocolate is not the freshest. The best is from a company in Marblehead, Massachusetts, called Harbor Sweets; they have a website for looking and ordering.

There are still a couple of chocolate makers in NYC, if you want to give the local folks a try. I'm thinking in particular of Lilac, in Greenwich Village. I'm pretty sure it's on Christopher St. but it might be Charles. You could also try a specialty food store such as Dean & Deluca or Balducci's.

Surely they are available at a mall nearby wherever you live. Why waste your valuable time in NYC in search of same? To be honest, Hersey Bars are just as good and cosst a whole lot less.

No way! Hershey's is at the absolute bottom of my list. Ghiradelli is better, Dove is better, Godiva is getting up there, all the chocolate in Italy and France is even better. Haven't made it to Switzerland, Belgium, or Holland yet. Will test upon arrival...

.......
Hershey bars as good as Godiva? I don't think so.

Is Godiva the best chocolate? No. However, it's better than Hershey, it's consistent, and you can get it just about everywhere and know what you are getting.

Lisa -

Make an effort to hunt out a more "mom and pop" chocolate shop. I haven't been to NYC for awhile but I'm sure they have shops like this in various neighborhoods. Perhaps do a search on the Net.

And remember, you can always go to Godiva's website. I'm sure they would be happy to ship them to you.

The best chocolates are made and shipped (overnight) by Ethel M (Mars family)in Las Vegas, NV.

Belgian chocolate, makes Godiva taste like Hershy kisses.

Godiva puts out pretty boxes wiht great presentation. Belgian chocolate tends to come in simple boxes and is decadent

it seems that everyone on this post would like this book, "the emperors of chocolate" it's a business biography of hersheys and mars and goes into the history of the choclate business, including a lot of the names mentioned here. it's really fascinating. you can read it on the plane ride to wherever your chocolate hunt is taking you!

Lady G. -

You must be kidding that Ethel M. is the best chocolate! There are so many superior brands to Ethel M. that the choices boggle the mind.

And that "tour" at their factory...
What a joke!

P.S. to chocoholics in general:
if you are ever at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA, try the chocolate covered fudge at Bodega. It is wonderful. They are know for it and it is made from a secret family recipe.

Neuhaus is better than Godiva. Shops are on their site (www.neuhaus.be).
