Oh Boy! David, are you gonna have fun!!
Do you have a list of the things you have always wanted to see?
If not, make one.
What is your favorite food?
Do you want to see a play?
Do you like certain music?
Museums?
the Circle Line is great to view Manhattan from the water.Or take the Staten Island ferry and get a good look at the city and the Statue of Liberty.
Wander through Central Park, maybe buy a pretzel and just keep walking.Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Go to the Village, wander, eat, shop.Good record shops.
Go to Soho, lots of good stuff to buy,in stores and on the street.Lots of good food, in restos and on the street.
Lots of pretty girls, everywhere.
Have dinner in Chinatown, and in Little Italy.
Go to the top of the Empire State Bldg.
If you are young enough,go to CBGB's...you will have stories to tell your friends for years!
Walk, talk to people, take lots of photos, eat lots of different foods.Enjoy yourself thoroughly,be happy!

I would say get a guidebook and just start thumbing through, depending on how long you are going to be here. Maybe if you give likes/dislikes etc. - too hard to give suggestions in general.

Don't forget to check out a Yankees game. Whether your a fan or not, the history in that building alone should be worth the visit. You can also go on a tour of Yankee Stadium. Check out www.yankees.com.

Many thanks for all your suggestions. Got Yankee tickets and will look into the tour. Any good resturants in the theater district. Going to three shows during stay. Would really like to just take off walking and find things on the fly, yet worried about getting lost. First time in NYC, but planning a yearly visit, so trying to just take it in as it goes, to build for the next visit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. No Mexican restaurants, am Hispanic by birth. Want new experiences!
