Glacier Park Closed

The park is closed on the west side to Logan pass until further notice due to dangerous fires in the area.

John, Thank you for this update. We will be in the area in September and I do hope the park will be open by then. Please keep us posted if you can. Montana is such a lovely state that we will enjoy it , but I love the park and I hoped to visit it during our September trip.

I heard the reports about Glacier this AM on my way in. They ended the report by saying that just about every state in the NW had at least one large fire burning at this time.

SABRINA
The east side of the park is open to Logan Pass. West side is still closed. This morning the Flathead valley is filled with smoke blocking out the sun!!
The Park should be opened completly by September. If not we are all in big trouble.

Don't let the fire keep you from going.

IMO, the east side is more spectacular than the west side so you are still getting a spectacular drive.

Thank you for all your help. We visited the park about 5 years ago, but the Road To The Sun was closed , due to snow. It was still the most beautiful of the National Parks that I have visited. Montana is a lovely state and we are looking forward to our trip.

We went through Road to the Sun last weekend. The fire had just started in Canada and they were worried abourt the spread.

Hello from Northwest Montana
The west side of Going to the sun road is still closed and Apgar and West Glacier have been evacuated. The fire laid down last night but brisk winds this afternoon have stirred up the blaze again. Large plumes of smoke can be seen from the Flathead valley and the valley is smoke filled in the mornings but clear in the afternoon as temps rise. Temp. at the moment(630 mountain time) is 93 degrees with the same forecasted for the next 10 days and NO rain in sight.
A backfire may be put into play tonight or tommorow to try to starve the advancing fire and save Apgar and West Glacier.
Incidentally Glacier Park headquarters in West Glacier is in direct line of the fire.
Is this more than you wanted to
know??
The East side of the park remains open up to Logan pass . Many Glacier area will reopen tommorow as that fire has moved on.
Mother Nature at work!!!

I fully agree. The east side of Glacier has a lot to offer.
There are many fine hikes on the east side. The walk up to Iceberg Lake and the trail to the Grinnell glacier are just two of many fine outings.
There are also boat rides to enjoy.

Any recommendations on campgrounds in the east side of Glacier nat. park ?

Also, is it possible to get a walk-in camp site in August ?

Many thanks for the update; I hope they are able to save West Glacier and the headquarters. We have reservations at Silverwolf in West Glacier for September; that may not be an option this year.
Would love to hear any news on GNP fires that you hear. Thanks.

At this time(200pm mountain time) the back fire has worked saving West Glacier and Apgar. Both are still closed. However winds are due to pick up this afternoon and I can see a new large plume of smoke.
Still smokey in the valley and still HOT!!!
