Girls Trip Away
Two of us 48 year olds getting away from it all for a few days in San Antonio for fun, fun! Questions, if you don't mind giving out a little advice?
1) What to wear generally. Are we talking western wear? Assuming from the other messages capris, shorts, black skirt, flip flops. We'll be tourists all day and then find dinner, dining and nightlife for later.
which brings me to 2)what 'nightlife' do you recommend for us two ladies. No new age music for us! Country, Dancing, Jazz, love it all!
Thanks,

I can't help with the nightlife question but I will say that you shouldn't worry at all about the wardrobe. Definitely not western wear though! LOL....
Like the rest of central Texas, San Antonio is very casual. The Riverwalk is also full of tourist so you're likely to see all kinds of clothing. Just wear what you normally wear and what makes you feel comfortable!
For walking around the Riverwalk, wear comfy shoes, not heels, etc.
I hope you get some good recommendations for where to go out for nightlife. I know you'll both have a great time. Enjoy!!

I am staying at The Emily Morgan Hotel next Monday night. I will post back and let you know how it was and what night life we enjoyed.
I think if you just walk around the River Walk you will enjoy! All kinds of bars and restaurants.

No western wear (except for CW clubs)--just shorts, capris--the basics. We took a fun ghost tour in SA last December and the Emily Morgan was one of our stops! Can't remember which room was haunted but evidently it's requested all the time by people hoping to see the ghost! Great location--just right off the Riverwalk and close to the Alamo.
One fun thing is to walk/jog the Riverwalk in the morning heading towards the historic King William district. It's fun looking at the gorgeous old mansions then end up eating breakfast at the Guenther House (another beautiful old mansion).
Sorry, no nightlife info.--I've only been there with kids!

Running is a great way to see a city!
Agree on running toward King William District on Riverwalk. Go along the left bank of the river until you can go no further...you'll go up some stairs then over a block to King William St, and do the entire length of the street. It's beautiful! Guenther House is on Guenther St, and King William T's into it.
Once away from the central part of the Riverwalk, you can actually keep a decent pace. In the central part of the Riverwalk however, you could go on hands and knees and keep up with the crowd! It is all absolutely safe...I do it every weekend with never a worry.
Can't help with the nightlife in town, but a fun side trip for an afternoon, especially good Sunday afternoons, is a trip to Gruene, TX, near New Braunfels, and home of Gruene Hall, an old open air dance hall and a genuine bit of music history. Sunday afternoons there will be some sort of group playing in Gruene Hall, no cover, and most are excellent. Gruene is an old timey Texas town--fun to explore the little shops even if nothing is going on in Gruene Hall, but you must see that, and hopefully, experience it as well. Eat at the Grist Mill next door after.
You'll occasionally see some genuine western wear in Gruene Hall as it draws a mix of locals and tourists, but it's not western wear as you picture it. Creased jeans, starched shirts, western only in the cut and the boots will be the real deal. These are local ranchers and fairly well heeled I'm guessing. Otherwise, western wear in this area stands out like a sore thumb.
San Antonio is more Spanish than Wild West. The Wild West begins just west of here around Bandera. To catch a bit of hte Spanish history, try to do a couple of the missions...San Jose is my favorite. It is really beautiful. There is a mariachi mass Sundays at noon...I've yet to make it for that but it is supposedly fantastic. More mission information: http://tinyurl.com/f4b3u
Hope you enjoy!!

I have stayed at the Emily Morgan and I really liked it. I had a mother daughter weekend last year and it was fun. You will be fine with capris, skirts, and shorts. I remember going to a piano bar at the Riverwalk called Howl at the Moon. It is pretty neat. There are lots of restaurants on the Riverwalk where you can have a meal and a drink. One of the most fun thing is watching people on the river and just soaking it all in. To get away from the crowds, the King William district is awesome. In all the times I have been to SA, last Christmas was the first time I had been to this area. I loved it!

Hi,
I just returned from San Antonio and stayed at the Emily Morgan. It is a lovely boutique Hotel right across the street form the Alamo.
My room was dedcorated in taupe/carmel colors with a wonderful feather bed. the outer bedcover was a little thread bare and could have been replaced.
The room was cheery and offered nice toiletries.
But, the bath and shower were dated and kind of falling apart. I had to "work" with the shower to make it work right. But the vanity/sink was beautiful.
The food in the restaurnat was very good. The staff was helpful and attentive, but at breakfast it took about 30 min to get my food....but it was very good!!
The location is great and you can walk to Riverwalk late at night and feel safe. Ask the Hotel to give you some reccomendations as they did for us but cannot remember the name of the Mexican restaurant.
Have Fun!!
