Can anyone give me an idea of what the Upper West Side - i.e., where the Excelsior and Lucerne are - is like as opposed to Midtown East area - where The Hotel Elysee, Kimberly and Salisbury are.
I've never been to Upper West Side. Is it comparable to Union Sq/Flatiron or the Village, or Gramercy Park area?
It seems a little remote to me, but maybe not. We will want to see Central Park, perhaps one show, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Ave, Bloomies, Barneys, Saks, Museum of Modern Art - don't know what else yet.
We like upscale and safe areas and don't want to spend a ton of $$ on cabs.

I don't know why you had that issue with the Lombardy. This was a residential hotel (ie wealthy people bought apts here and stayed when they were in town). It doesn't get many reviews on tripadvisor but I recently heard from someone who stayed there and said it was great. It's just a bit closer to more neighborhoody restaurants than the Elysee and the rooms sound large. I also know the rooms/apts at the Affinia 50 are large. I think overall given the things you want to see and do, midtown east is a better idea for you.
The upper west side has lots of different "looks." There are charming townhouses and brownstones on some streets that are somewhat reminescent of the village, some large beaux arts apartment buildings that are amazingly beautiful (like the Ansonia), and then there are some more commercial looking areas particularly along Broadway. Remember John Lennon lived at the Dakota which is at the corner of 72 st & Central Park West and is one of the huge amazing looking buildings with towers.
The Excelsior sits at a lovely spot across from the Natural History Museum. The Lucerne is an unusual looking building (former apt building or residential hotel I think). The movie "You've Got Mail" takes place on the upper west side but really shows the nicest bits. I think it would be fine for you but given your midtown shopping interests, I don't see it makes much sense to stay uptown unless the hotel savings are substantial which I doubt.
The Lombardy is an older hotel. The Affinia 50 is a 60s era building (white brick) that's been recently renovated inside. The Elysee is an older building but clearly a hotel. I would pick from amongst those 3 based on price and size of accomodation.

We love the Roosevelt Hotel on the corner of Madison. I just received an email from them. $199 a night for two nights and the third night free! Includes breakfast and a "brown bag lunch." (never heard of that but, okay) We really like the location and how close it is to Grand Central to catch the subway to SoHo and Little Italy.
