getting to Japan Town

I've read about Japan Town on Fodor's, but can't find directions to get there. My husband lived in Japan, near Tokyo, as a boy, and I know he would love to go to Japan Town.

I think you mean J Town, LA. I visited this area about 25 years ago. I'm sure some things have changed but I remember it being quite nostalgic. Quite similar to many large cities Chinatown.

After doing a wee bit of sleuthing, I clicked on sandypaws name, I saw that she has booked a restaurant in San Francisco..so that is why I think this is about Japan Town in SF.

To get to Japan Town S.F., take the Geary St. bus (I forget the line #) which runs from the Union Square area to the Ocean. Call the S.F. Muni information number for the line number and the directions to where to catch it from where you are. Ask the driver to call out Japan Town when you get there, although you'll probably recognize it first from the architecture and the signs.

The Geary Street bus is the number 38. Do not get on a "limited", or 38L bus, as they make a minimum number of stops - for instance, no stops between Fillmore and Van Ness.

Alternate bus routes are the 2 Clement, 3 Jackson and 4 Sutter. They all run along Sutter Street heading west - ask to be let off at Buchanan and Sutter.

Sandypaws, please throw in a confirm to let these kind Fodors posters that their guess of Japantown, San Francisco is correct.

The 38L bus, though it doesn't stop between Van Ness and Fillmore, is fine because the Japan Center--the enclosed shopping mall with many Japanese shops and restaurants--has its west end on Fillmore St. between Geary and Post. (I'm sure of this because I worked in that building for two years!) Dovima's proposed place to get off the #2, 3 or 4 buses, at Buchanan and Sutter, is fine too--that's just the other side of the neighborhood.

I can't help you with the directions (but I bet your hotel can). In the Japanese theme though in SF, visit the japanese tera garden in golden gate park. It's lovely.

I'll be there on Saturday and will dine at Shabu Shabu. If your husband wants a good meal he'll love it. Great city. Enjoy.
