My favorite places might not be of interest to your friend. I would encourage her to learn about Japan and decide what interests here. japan-guide.com provides a wealth of information that she might find it helpful to review.

Our favorite place was Arashiyama. We were there for the koto.

I should add that Hakone is another interesting example. It didn't even make my next-to-last wish-list for a 21-day trip. Of course, that means I can't say whether I would have enjoyed it had I gone. And that, of course, will be a problem with ANY responses you get to this question -- NO ONE can speak to what they did NOT experience! I suspect that Hakone would be of greater interest to couples than to solo travelers, and I was traveled solo.

If I could only go back to a single place, it would be Kyoto.
But I also loved our time in Kyushu on this recent trip.
As Kja says, she really should read some guidebooks or sites such as Japan Guide and see what fits her personal interests best...
