My favorite places might not be of interest to your friend. I would encourage her to learn about Japan and decide what interests here. japan-guide.com provides a wealth of information that she might find it helpful to review.

Hakone was at the top of our list. Being newbies to Japan, I am sure some of the well traveled people will have more exciting suggestions.

Our favorite place was Arashiyama. We were there for the koto.

I keep changing it to koyo and autocorrect changes it to koto.

Arashiyama is a great example. Much as I enjoyed the area, it wouldn't even have made my top 12 list, but I wasn't there for the autumn foliage. It depends on the time of year, as well as the person's interests.

I should add that Hakone is another interesting example. It didn't even make my next-to-last wish-list for a 21-day trip. Of course, that means I can't say whether I would have enjoyed it had I gone. And that, of course, will be a problem with ANY responses you get to this question -- NO ONE can speak to what they did NOT experience! I suspect that Hakone would be of greater interest to couples than to solo travelers, and I was traveled solo.

Tokyo and Kyoto should be on her itinerary.

Kyushu is my answer to your question.

Northeastern Hokkaido - Shiretoko Peninsula

If I could only go back to a single place, it would be Kyoto.

But I also loved our time in Kyushu on this recent trip.

As Kja says, she really should read some guidebooks or sites such as Japan Guide and see what fits her personal interests best...
