G'Day from Oz, Mahatten Restaurants
G'Day my wife and I will be in NY at the end of May on route to Normandy to pay tribute to those who fell on the beaches on D Day 1944. We will be staying at Hotel Belvedere on 319 West 48th Street. We want to eat with "The Locals " as you say.Need some guidance with resonable cheap restaurants in and around where we are located. Cheers

You'll really have to be more specific--what type of food do you like, what's your price range. "Reasonable cheap" may have different meanings for diffenent people. THere are so many restaurants in that area, if you narrow it down, we can certainly help.

Your best bet for finding neighborhood type places near your hotel is to head West - towards Ninth Ave, away from the pricier Times Square area. There are lots of places that I would classify as reasonably priced (for NY)along Ninth Ave in the 40's and 50's.
Here are a few that I like:
Italian - La Locanda on Ninth, between 49th & 50th; Amarone, on Ninth between 47th & 48th.
Chinese - Grand Sichuan on Ninth between 50th & 51st
French - Chez Napoleon, on 50th St. between Eighth & Ninth Ave.

$25 total (including beverage tax and tip) is pretty basic for New York for dinner. Lunch is easy - there are tons of delis with great sandwiches/salads (Cosi I like especially - it has a bunch of branches) and casual ethnic places (especially chinese or Indian) that offer very reasonable lunch specials - in the range of $10.
Agree with the suggestion to walk over to 9th avenue for a bunch of reasonsable options. Another good choice is the upper west side. Broadway, Amsterdan and Columbus in the 70's through 90's typically has a couple of restaurants every block - and while some are more moderate many are in the budget range. Weather that time of year should be perect for evening strolling - I would just grab a subway up to 72 st and explore from there til you find a place that hits your fancy. (This is a middle/upper crusty residential area - but with lots of shops - and an interesting walk in the evening anyway.)

In addition to what's been mentioned, John's Pizzeria (on West 44th St), is good, not your typical pizza place but a bit more upscale, casual, good pizza and other food. If you like Chinese food, Ollies also on W. 44th is pretty good, inexpensive. I'm not sure if you meant $25 total or per person, but Osteria al Doge on West 46th Street is good, and two can eat for around $50. For good burgers, check out Island Burger on 9th Ave and 50th St. For excellent Greek, Uncle Nick's also on 9th Ave. between 50th and 51st St.
