If that is where you want to be, the only place I know in the heart of the Gaslamp is the Villager Lodge-Gaslamp. It is two diamond from AAA and they say it is newly remodeled with a free shuttle from the airport. It is at 660 G Street in an old building in character with the times with 105 rooms in the $100 range. It might be a fun place. http://www.villagerlodge.com

While I'm not sure I would choose the Gas Lamp District as an area to stay, if that is where you want to be check out the following site.

The Marriott at the Marina is pretty nice. It is right on the water, has a nice pool and outdoor hot tub, is beside the Seaport Village shopping area (great place to stroll), and is across the street from the Gaslamp District. Many of the rooms provide good views of the bay and/or downtown.

Hi--my wife and I stayed at the Ramada Inn and Suites (the old St James Hotel)at 830 6th Ave. in the Gaslamp. Great location, right around the corner from all the action. My one complaint was the small room, but I think you can get a suite for a slightly higher rate.

I have stayed at a number of places, some more than once, including the Westin Horton Plaza, the U.S. Grant, Horton Grand and the William Penn. All good. But I like the St. James a lot. The other poster is right about the rooms being small, but there are some suites. There is a great rooftop and the old elevator is really fun and quirky. The rate was good too.
