There are still gas lines and many empty stations in Atlanta. The supply was interrupted after the last hurricane came through the Gulf. Some people panicked, and starting topping off their cars whenever they saw an open station. I've also seen lawn service crews filling up many, many containers of gas for their businesses. The situation was suppose to last a few days but it's still going on. Don't plan on filling up in Atlanta this week. The State is now predicting we will continue to have shortages and lines through Columbus Day weekend. When you can find an open station (and some stations are limiting how much you can purchase), gas is costing about $4.29 per gallon.

Unlike most parts of the US, almost all of the Southeast and parts of the South get their gas from 2 pipelines, but primarily from 1 - the Colonial Pipeline (which originates outside Houston). Ike severely interrupted the production of gas. The gas flows in pipeline at the rate of 3-5 mph, so even when production gets up to full speed, it takes a LONG time for it to go from Houston to Atlanta and the SE.
