Galveston for 1 night

Looking for a decent hotel - not expensive - for 1 night stay before our cruise. We'll have a car, so don't have to be in the 'center of the action'.

By the way - anyone know how far it is from Austin to Galveston, driving-time-wise?

Thanks all!

212 miles - half on highways and half on freeways. Figure 3-4 hourse depending upon Houston-area traffic.

As for hotels, the Tremont House and the Hotel Galvez are both fully restored century-old classic hotels.

I like Gaido's Seaside Inn, right behind Gaido's Restaurant. It's a trip to the '50's. You can eat at Casey's, behind Gaido's and next to the motel, no wait, same kitchen, and less expensive.

Gaido's sounds perfect! Any suggestion on whether one room is better than another? Do you know how far it is from the historic district?

Thanks, bobludlow - I was afraid it was even further than that!

cheezz......Cant say if any one room is better. If I remember, they all open onto the pool, which then looks nto the water. We did not go to the historic district from the hotel so aint much help am I?? The food at Casey's is fabulous.Gaido's itself has a reputation of being "touristy".

Must say that the Medical School Graduation dinner I hosted for a former employee and dear friend at Gaido's (rear/select) restaurant was fabulous.

From Gaido's Inn to the historic district is maybe 10-15 min drive. Not really walking distance.

The Strand (historic district) is about 2.5 to 3 miles from Gaido's. If you don't want to drive they have the Galveston Island Trolley that will take you there. I'm not sure if it stops in front of Gaido's but you can check their website and see. Enjoy!

I think the drive from Austin to Galveston would be 4 hours without any traffic!

Thanks all! I've booked Gaido's - great price there. Looking forward to seeing Galveston for the first time. Was going to take the carriage ride, but $20 per person for 15 min... WOW! Looks like some interesting architecture there... can't wait!
