GAIL AT A GEORGIA BEACH
I need help. I have traveled the world, but I have never been to Savannah or that area. My daughter is going to camp at SCAD in July. I plan on laying on a beach while she is doing her art. Where should I go? It does not have to be fancy. I don't want to spend more then $150/night. B&B, condo, hotel I really don't care. I just want it on the beach. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Gail

Tybee Island is about the only beach close by (about 18 miles from downtown). I like it, but many consider it down on its heels, and I doubt you'll find anyplace nice in July for $150/night. But if you have to stay at the beach and want to be able to jump into Savannah daily, it's your only real choice. There is one large hotel on the island (Ocean Plaza) or a few smaller properties.
If you don't mind staying further from Savannah, Hilton Head is about 45 minutes away and your choices there are much broader.

Sea Island and Jekyll to the south are also possibilities. Even though Georgia has a long coast line, the barrier islands like Sapelo and Ossabaw hamper the beach scene. Jekyll has a good beach, but prices tend to go up in July when people flock there. A little farther south is Fernandina Beach.
It is a good distance, but I 95 is a major artery that enables fairly fast driving.
