In answer to the question about a place that is liberal and afforable, I'd pick Austin or New Orleans. Austin is extremely liberal (liberal oasis of Texas) as is New Orleans (everyone from Mayor to Representatives to Governor is a Democrat - in fact the runoff is usually between two Democratic candidates).

Are you talking about moving there or just visiting?
I travel to both liberal and conservative cities all the time and *gasp* I find the people to be nice to me no matter where I am or who they are!
Liberals can be gracious and nice... Conservatives can be fun!
Crazy! Who would have thought?

Rereading this old thread, I see that little has changed with stereotyping conservative and liberal by social issues/financial criteria- so very narrowly and artificially.
Between the lines here, I get the feel more than differences in politics here, people have hugely different ideas about what is "fun" for them. They obviously have not the same ideas of fun at all.
Nor have they ever been within baseball crowds in places like Kansas City, that's for sure.

I'm not sure about a split based on financial criteria, but "conservative" groups have a reputation for busting loose when they are away from home.
The wildest group of conventioneers in New Orleans is supposedly the Southern Baptist Convention. And, a co-worker said you haven't seen partying until you host a party boat for nuns in New Orleans.
I suppose there's quite a few stories behind the creation of the motto "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas".
Having said that, I don't see any merit in labeling towns "red" and/or "liberal". Most travelers can find their version of fun no matter the city they might be visiting.
