1.Hiking from town to town for 10 days along the south shore of Crete. There are no roads there...it's incredibly serene. We also swam in marble caves, which glowed inside due to the algae and angle of the sun.
2.Club Med Playa Blanca, Mexico. Thought I would't like it, 'cause I'm more of an adventurer, but I was so wrong. It's small, in the middle of nowhere, and is adults-only. An extremely friendly atmosphere, and tons and tons of fun stuff to do. It made me feel like I was 8 years old again. The ultimate relaxation experience!!!
3.A 3-day boat trip in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand. We traveled with a group of 10, plus support staff and an incredible cook (Thai food's my favorite). They took us to the most beautiful islands, where we got in our kayaks and went through dark caves that led to beautiful lagoons. Saw monkeys, 6' lizards, and armies of colorful crabs. Snorkeled beautiful reefs, visited beaches with flour-like sand. Camped out on tiny uninhabited islands at night (could have done w/o the camping, but it was worth it).

XXX, the Navy gave me paid vacations to Australia, New Zealand, Pago-Pago, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and St Thomas. Also to San Diego and DC. Glad that some of you liked the Heavens Above site. I have been a devoted night sky watcher for years. My son was able to work on the student satellite 'Starshine 2'. That was a thrill for him to see a satellite pass over, that he had helped prepare.

This is intriguing and hard to decide, but I'm ready to bite:
1) The sea plane trip take in the Misty Fjords in Alaska--that landed mid-way through the trip so that we could get out of the plane on the pontoons to view the whales. Amidst the fog and glaciers it was amazing.
2) The trip through the Canadian Rockies, and in particular, Lake Louise and Jasper.
3) The European cruise that had us traveling to Paris the morning after Princess Di was killed. We found out the news onboard the bus that would later take us past the tunnel where onlookers gathered and lay flowers everywhere. Ironically, we were in London the day before and, in the days following days we would also be in Gibralter where flowers and candles from mourners were placed outside the cathedral. It was chilling. The rest of this trip was filled with memories of visiting St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistene Chapel, Trevi Fountain, the Colliseum while in Rome. The history there is incredible.

Love this thread.
1. July 1976, My first real trip without parents. I travelled with 4 other girls throughout the southwest. One afternoon we found ourselves on a bluff overlooking the painted desert, the shadows of the clouds played across the landscape while Layla blasted on the radio. It was such a feeling of freedom.
2. May 1982, my husband and I took our first trip to NYC. We were spending a few days with friends who took good care of us poor yokels. One day they put us in a cab and sent us to MOMA for the afternoon. After a few hours we realized we'd left their umbrella in a little hole in the wall basement bar. We decided to break out and try to find it again on our own. We made a few wrong turns and some great discoveries before we finally found the bar. As we walked down the steps the jukebox started playing ... Start spreading the news ... We felt victorious.
July 2001, a third of the way through our family's great North American road trip. We'd met up with my best friend's family in California and drove down to Baja, Mexico. Sunset, a golden beach, my kids, my husband of 21 years and my best friend of 30 years. It doesn't get any better than that.
Thanks for the memories.

1. The view of Paris from the second level. It had just rained and it the air was clear and fresh, the sun was shining. It was close to 7pm and not many tourists around (can you believe that?). It was just spectacular. Beautiful city.
2. Driving up the California coast. So gorgeous--the golden hills, the beaches.
3. Seeing the fall foliage in the Hudson Valley for the first time. I just couldn't believe how incredible the colors were! And the Hudson River is so picturesque.

#1 The Jalousie Hilton in St Lucia. Private Villa and pool on a steep hillside with a straight view of the ocean between the Pitons. Had a massage at the spa. The table was on the edge of a cliff outside. A protected natural coral reef is located 50 feet from the shore. Freakin' awesome.
#2 Paris at the George V, tea at the De Crillon. I just love Paris.
#3 New York City. The Benjamin, Regent Wall Street, Pierre... the choices are without limit! Authentic Italian food at the Italian Grocery on Mulberry @ Grand, and shopping!

Wow! How did that happen? I only posted one time!
While I'm here, I'll add the following:
The Vietnam, Korea and other war memorials in DC are profound emotionally, as was the Pentagon (in March).
New Orleans - be sure to read a good historical book or novel before you go. It is a great experience.
Hawaii... I stayed in Pearl Harbor last time. Another great place.
There ARE so many, each unique.
