friend's trip choice: st. louis vs. louisville

A friend of mine is trying to decide between two conferences he can attend this fall (on the same topic). He can either go to Louisville,Ky the first week in October, or to St.Louis in mid October. He's never been to either destination. He says he likes city tours, river tours/riverfront areas, live music, restaurants, and historic districts. Which choice do you guys suggest?

I've visited both, and definitely would pick St Louis over Louisville.

Close call, St. Louis has more riverboat tours. But I found that Bardstown Road in Louisville has better food and nightlife than St. Louis, it would be the type of area he would like, and to me it offers much more for nightime street life than anywhere in St. Louis.

In a close call I would go with Louisville to meet your friends criteria. I personally would go with St. Louis because of the Art Museum and ballpark and Cathedral.

I live in St. Louis and have been to Louisville numerous times, as DH used to live there and still has family there. I like Louisville, but I think there is much more to do in St. Louis. There are some great restaurants and neighborhoods here, and the river front is fun. He could take one of the short river boat rides along the Mississippi. There are some great places in the city and the Central West End to listen to live music. For historic neighborhoods with good restaurants and neat buildings, he should check out Lafayette Square and Soulard, and of course no visit to St. Louis would be complete without a great Italian dinner on The Hill!
