Most of Sonoma's are free. Many of the ones in Napa charge.

This is a huge question. What kinds of wines do you like? Have you acquired a traveler's guide to the wineries? Are you simply interested in the free aspect?

Go to the chamber of commerce in any of the towns along the way and they give out free "wine tasting" certificates to many vinyards. Most have a $3-10 charge.

For better wines, expect to have to pay a tasting fee.

I agree with xx dificult question to answer because my bet it is close to 50-50 now. If you go to Napa/Sonoma you can find a guide to wineries that will tell you which charge and which do not. Or do a goggle search like
"sonoma+travel"
and you will find the information on line good luck
