My personal opinion...I wouldn't bother with such a long trip for only four nights. You will go through long security lines, and your luggage may be lost with all those planes. I don't think it's worth it.

Jet lag affects some people going east to west, and some people west to east.
It rarely affects people both directions.
It has nothing to do with gaining or losing clock time per se. It has to do with each person's circadian rhythms and how their hormonal patterns adapt to the change in daylight exposure.
There's plenty of good review info on this in the Euro forum, along with tips on minimizing effects.

I'm even more confused. Aren't you the same "TravelBel" who posted yesterday information about Maui and said "we're going again in April"? If your mind is already made up what are you asking here? And aren't you the same "TravelBel" who posted yesterday about the Star Wars convention near downtown without telling us which downtown, but meanwhile you haven't returned to see what responses you got, or to explain where this convention is?

What's the time difference between Detroit and Hawaii, four hours?
I've personally never had a problem with jet lag on any trip that involved a time difference of less than five or six hours. I live overseas though, so I'm all too familiar with jet lag.
When I travel to Hawaii from within the US, I find that I wake up early the first day or two, but that's about it. It's actually sort of nice, because I'm able to get a jump start on the day and squeeze more into my visit.
I've never suffered from jet lag on the return end, although I have been tired after an overnight flight (I can't sleep on planes).
Personally, I'd take full advantage of that free trip, but then I seldom win anything! I would extend the trip by as much as possible and include a visit to the BI or Kauai as well.

travleis, tell us all about circadian rhythms? What are they ?
Jet lag has everything to do with gaining or losing time, as jet lag by defintion involves travelling through several time zones. If you fly for 8 hours in a north-south direction and stay in the same time zone you might be tired but that is not jet lag. No time zone change, no jet lag.

I think two sides of the same coin are being discussed, a circadian rhythm is 24hour biological cycle that can be affected by hormones and length of daylight. Jet lag is a disruption of a circadian rhythm or the body's "biological". If TravelBel suffers from severe jetlag suggest consulting a physician specializing in sleep disorders. Personally would use jetlag as an excuse for aoror some delicious Kona ~o)or Kauai~o)coffee!
