Free public parking - Santa Monica Pier?

We want to spend a day down by the Santa Monica Pier, and want to rent bikes for the day to ride down to Venice. Is there free public parking in the area, close to the pier?
We are staying at the Ambrose, which isn't walking distance to the Pier. I am trying to weigh the costs of taking a taxi to the pier, or driving and parking for the day?

No, there is a fee to park--I cannot remember if it is around $6 or more... Look up the city of Santa Monica website for exact info.

Free parking is available at several garages in downtown Santa Monica, which is a short (and interesting) walk to the pier.

happytrails is right-- to a point. The free parking in the SM city garages is for two hours, last I checked. The closest I can think of is going to be on Second Street between Santa Monica and Broadway (east side of street), just up from the Hotel Carmel. And the Ambrose is about two miles from the Pier. It CAN be walked (I've done a comparable walk from a car dealership to my office)-- but the walk isn't interesting.

Personally, I'd cab it.

Oops-- one other possibility. Park at Santa Monica Place (the mall at Second and Colorado). First three hours free, and you'll be one block from the Pier. I'd still cab it-- but this is an option.

In September we parked at the above-mentioned mall and walked to the pier. Unless you have a walking disability, it is an easy walk from there to the pier (two or three blocks). We parked in the corner closest to the pier--near the conspicuous McDonald's.

I used to work down on the promenade near the mall and you can park there forever on mon-thurs with no problem. But if you stay past the 3 hr limit on fri-sun expect a $47 ticket.
Maybe park in a neighborhood along Santa Monica or Wilshire and ride the Big Blue Bus #1 or #2 down. 75 cents/perway and 25 cents if you're a UCLA student GLuck

Ok, believe it or not, I had to look up the Ambrose, because I didn't know where it was. The hotel website says they have a free vintage London taxi for "short jaunts" -- 20th St. to the pier is what I would consider to be a "short jaunt". Just so you know, in Santa Monica, the numbered streets (i.e. 20th) indicates how many blocks you are from the Pacific Ocean, so you are 20 blocks away. Best thing for you to do would be walk one block south to the corner of Santa Monica and 20th, and take the Big Blue Bus (75 cents, need exact change). It will take you right where you want to go.

Thank you to everyone for your helpful information. I didn't realize the Ambrose offered a free ride in the area. Thank you surfergirl for pointing that out!
