Fredericksburg, New Braunfels or Gruene?

We cannot decide which town to stay in for one night in June-we'll have just stayed 3 nights in San Antonio (Menger Hotel) and will be headed to Austin for 3 nights (Omni)
for niece's wedding (all the family is staying at the Omni).
But, for one night between San Antonio and Austin we can't decide because we've never been there. In Fredericksburg the Nimitz Museum sounds like a place my husband would enjoy and I'd like the shopping. Since that's what we like to do-look around and enjoy good food, is New Braunfels or Gruene as good a choice?
We don't have kids and don't want to raft or anything like that. Just walk around and relax-just don't know which town would be best for that.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, any outstanding B&B's in any of these towns?
Thanks,
Shadow

I'd go with Fredericksburg. It is definitely the nicest of the three towns you're deciding between. Fredericksburg has lots of cute restaurants there, and the shopping is great! There is a B&B reservation service called Gasthaus Schmidt that serves the entire Fredericksburg area.

If you prefer to walk around shop, rather than tube the river, then I agree with ChristiP....definitely Fredrickburg.

I agree that Fredricksburg fits your needs much better than NB or Gruene.

However, to make sure you know, NB and Gruene are between SA and Austin, just off I 35.

Fredricksburg is west/Northwest of Austin - 75 miles or so. You'd be heading out of SA on smaller roads. It's actually a pretty nice drive. Also about an hour + drive from SA.

Another vote for Fredericksburg and the reservation service Gasthaus Schmidt. Be sure and drop by the Lincoln Street Wine Bar for a glass or two. Also, Becker Vinyard is a cute little winery/vinyard.

I can't remember the name, but there's a beer garden in Fredricksburg and the featured entertainer is pretty good. His name is Rajah Khan and his local trademark in Fredricksburg is the "Turban Cowboy" - he's from India but sings great country/western music.

Actually, the Becker Winery occasionally makes some really good stuff.
You'll like San Antonio and the Menger, but I prefer La Mansion and three nights may be a bit much.
There are amazing roads in the Hill Country SW of Fredericksburg esp @ the Lost Maples between Vanderpool and Medina.
Obviously, I agree that Fredericksburg and the B&B locator are for you.
Austin is wonderful: we love Vespaio on S Congress, Jeffrey's, and the wild game place out by Lake Travis.
Hope you have a great time in the best part of the state!

Thanks for all the great information!
Fredericksburg it is!! After looking into lots and lots of B&B's I've made a reservation for Magnolia House. I was only seriously looking at B&B's that offer a full-cooked breakfast. I've been to Ireland 7 times (my mom lives there) and I only stay at B&B's (while traveling around) and I've been going since the early 70's when B&B's were almost unheard of here in the states but were and still are fantastic in Ireland. So, a "continental breakfast" at a B&B does not cut it for me!! I'll let you know what I think when I get back!!
Again, thanks!
