My husband and I are planning a driving road trip from Mobile to Austin, Texas the last week of June. We are looking for some funky, fantastic, don't miss places along the way. Any ideas of wonderful B & Bs? Funky restaurants? Wonderful people meeting places?

I love Fredricksburg, TX - although it's just outside Austin. Cute B&Bs.

Several ways you could do this trip, but one is West on I-10 to Luling Tx. Exit 632 or so. Then North on 183 to Austin.

If you time it right for lunch, the City Market in Luling has some of the best BBQ you'll ever flap a lip over!

Neat little place . . meat ordered and served on butcher paper . .

City Market is on Main St. just past the RR tracks.

We make this trip at least twice a year, although we go an hour further to Pensacola. Just my opinion, but I suggest you just drive straight through to Austin. It's not a fun drive and I honestly can't think of too many fun and funky things to do along the way. Save your time and spend it in Austin.

If you have to stop, Lafayette, LA, is the perfect stopping point. I can't help you with fun and funky in Lafayette but maybe you can do a separate post on that.

As for Fredericksburg, lots of people really like that place. I think it's a really cheesy touristy place. But again, just my opinion. It's also about an hour or more west of Austin so it will definitely be out of your way.

. . . and . . If you do take the I-10 route, be sure to avoid going thru Houston at rush hour(s) . . from about 4 till 7 . . Major construction on I-10 can slow traffic to a standstill.

Good advice Rich. I'll add too that traffic now in Baton Rouge is always bad. We've been through there at various times during the day and it always backs up. Expect a delay.

If you haven't been to the Tabasco "factory" at Avery Island, LA, take a little side trip. It definitely fits the bill as "funky". It won't take long to see the place, but you'll remember it forever. Avery Island itself is interesting - or at least was to me.

I have only been to lower lower alabama (lillian and Mobile) so I am looking forward to the drive through Bayou country. We live in southern california so we understand the traffic thing. Just looking for quaint little towns to meander through rather than just taking the I 10 route....the scenic route....

If you have the time, consider taking I-10/610 through New Orleans, and then I-310 to US90 towards Avery Island and Lafayette. That would bypass Baton Rouge, and it's a slightly more interesting drive.

There's the Southdown Plantation Home in Houma, SW of New Orleans.
