CAPH - Best wishes from way down here!
Rave: Winter is way over with temps in the 70's and 80's and humidities in the 20's.
Rave: Two new local investment opportunities: all here are beating the brains out of Wall Street.
Rave: XOM, as always: maybe Pemex at some time way down the line.
Rant: Congress - as always: Port Security is US responsibility.
Rant: Ronkala - the state should prosecute the parents for child endangerment, and fine them (endangered species?) for the deaths of the bears.

rjw, yes everything has new perspectives. I was diagnosed with melignant melenoma (don't care if I got the spelling wrong) 19 years ago and I am cancer free. There is Always hope. Stay out of the sun unless you use sun screen. Never give up.

mms, The infamous Pig Sandwich was a pork sandwich which another restaurant chain had already coined. The case gave me a whole new perspective about how we Americans litigate over almost anything.

Good work dwooddon!

We have those here frequently, that's why I can't get as sympathetic towards animals as I should at times.

In the last two weeks we have been on a binge in Chicago. It seemed like it was getting so much better for awhile. We had an 11 year old get stabbed to death (more than 10 stab wounds) because he made the neighbor in the apartment next door "mad". Then in just days 4 kids right in the process of being loaded into the car for day school got gunned down with their gang leader father.

I can't say the name of the gang because I don't want to give them publicity. But the 4 year old has a bullet hole in his foot and a 5 year old girl through the upper thigh. Father is critical and was shot 3 or 4 times while putting the very smaller baby in the car seat.

How can people care so little about human life? And to see it is worse than the bullet holes themselves. The only kid not hit was walking around saying " they shot my Daddy in the eye." And it goes on and on- what will he do in just a few years??

Sorry- shouldn't have ended Friday that way but I am so sick of it, I can't put the news on anymore. And it is illegal to have guns on your person in Chicago. All it does is to keep the law abiding citizens from carrying.

Rave: hello Fodorites! It's Friday again!

Rant: no more poison threads, where in the world is Statia?

Rant: Caph, be strong for your family. We've all been there at one time or another. Take care of yourself too. Best wishes to RJW.

Rave: it's a sunny day in San Francisco!

Rave: only 11 days till vacations!

Rave: I need so little to be happy!

Oh, no, a mini-mini-rant, yesterday after the figure skating was over, I started a thread "congratulatin, Japan!" on Asia's board. No trace of the thread today.

Both bears tested negative for rabies.

Tonight one of the D.C. TV stations reported on the incident and said a parent may have helped the four year old climb over the 4 ft wall. That's worse than not keeping track of what the kid was doing.

In Oct. '04 while we were at the Grand Canyon, three boys about six to nine years old were climing over and through the railing at one of the overlooks near Bright Angel. The parents weren't paying a bit of attention to them.

Rave: DS says I'm going to be a grandma in October!! It will be our first and I'm SO happy I can hardly stand it!
He called and had us get off work alittle early so they could take all the 'grans' out to eat to tell us the newa and celebrate last night.

Rant: We had no water pressure last night, and discovered this AM that we had a major water main burst and causing a water fall from the side of our home (flower bed) to the pond. DH has worked himself hard today, trying to fix the problem, but it took more than he could do and the city finally arrived to help.
Three huge shrubs had to be removed, and later replanted to make the repair.

Rave: City admits it was their fault, so I don't expect to have to pay for the huge water loss!

My prayers go with all who are suffering, or have loved ones who are.

Congrats to Melissa for the sale of your condo! So have you bought a home?

Rave: in less than five hours, I'll be on a German ICE train heading to Vienna. The train leaves from Cologne, follows the Rhine for a couple of hours, then Nuremberg and then heads east through the snowy Austrian countryside to Vienna.

Rave: all packed and suitcase isn't TOO heavy. With a *little* room for some Vienna souvenirs

Rant: the bear story above. Absolutely no need to put down the poor animals because of human foolishness.

Rave: All my friends and closest family members are in good health. A blessing we sometimes take for granted. Thoughts and prayers to those in pain and sickness.

Rave: After some tough days (surgery, chemo, radiation) in the mid 1980s, my father-in-law has been cancer free for nearly 20 years.

The bears weren't euthanized because they were thought to be vicious. They were euthanized because there was a very small chance that they could have had rabies. Since it wasn't known which one bit the child, both had to be euthanized. Whenever there is a risk of rabies to humans the animal has to be euthanized for testing. This is why you should always teach your children to NEVER approach a wild animal or feed it. This also applies to those cute little furries in our backyards. Animals that have learned to take food from humans will approach them and bite them. I cringe every time I see adults encouraging their kids to feed the cute little ground squirrels during my TRAVELS to National Parks.

Hi everyone,

3 weeks of having BF back and all is well...except for the fact that now I'm remembering that when there are 2 parents, one is often "the bad guy"-and that role is definately mine!

Bummed to see that Sheryl Crow has breast cancer. She's a favorite of mine..though I'm annoyed that the media seems to be just as concerned "Does Lance know,or does Lance think..blah blah" The flip side is that whenever someone famous is dealing w/ a terrible illness, it atleast gets people to get checked outr themselves.
Best wishes to all!

Congratulations, OSB! What wonderful news!

I understand the necessity of testing the bears for rabies. But it's still such a shame!

I also wanted to comment on the perspectives thing. I agree wholeheartedly that the news we received yesterday causes one to put things into perspective. But I also think that part of the reason I was so obsessed with the loss of my phone was because that was "easier" to worry about than waiting for the results of my husband's tests. I felt a little more in control of that situation as I could at least look for the phone. But with the test results, there was nothing I could do but wait.

CAPH, RJW and JJ5--you're always in my thoughts and prayers. Hoping you and your loved ones have moments that make you smile this week

Rave: Lucy's daughter's ok

DWooden's detective work and great memory--he still sending my class postcards when he travels! (For those of you in the Central US, I could use postcards from the middle of the country...pretty please

OSB--congrats! I've been wanting so much to tell my mom the same thing but apparently there's another plan for us. Think she'd be disappointed if we adopt??

KLR--didn't know about Sheryl Crow. Poor girl! We have tickets to see her in about 2 weeks, wonder if she'll have to cancel...

Rave: Tiff's adorable trip report on the Europe board! I wish we could've gone too but at least we can enjoy ourselves vicariously til we get back to Italy.

Wishing everyone hugs, smiles and sunshine!

CAPH,RJW, JJ5 and other Fodorites who are facing challening times, blessings to you and your family.

Rave: Jorr for having a heart In the local newspaper two weeks ago it was written that home owners who find a dead animal in their yard get the "priveledge of bagging and chucking it themselves" as though they are a piece of garbage--that insensitive statement angered me so I wrote a letter to the editor. I love animals and have burried one or two in our backyard. Very sweet of you, Jorr.

Rave: DH and I just returned last night from skiing in Colorado. We enjoyed some much needed time together and the weather was perfect for me--cold and snowy!

Rave: Our cat did well without us but I think that is the last time we will leave her together.

Rant: NBC coverage of olympic events--I lost interest with the back and forth coverage and late nights.

OWJ: Absolutely not! They will be proud of your child no matter how you have it!
My husband's fav cousin & her DH did so and have thoroughly enjoyed their beautiful daughter! She is a olive skinned, brown eyed beauty (I believe her natural father was Jamaican with caucasian mother), and very intelligent...became a lawyer and is working in D.C. now. Her REAL parents, the ones who raised her, are generous (spoiled her good, Ha!) super loving and generous parents in north AL...middle class, hard working folks. In fact, she is a teacher, like yourself!
That child gave them MUCH joy, and still does into adulthood.

In fact, I had also been told I may have difficulty getting pregnant, but that did not turn out to be accurate. So, we had discussed adoption and would have if necessary. There have been times I considered it even though I had two sons, but never really acted on the desire.
I strongly encourage you to do so, knowing how much you want to have children. Even if you do end up prenant later, it will just be an added blessing!

God Bless!
Belle

rjw, I couldn't agree with you more on contributing to the disease charities. Some time ago, when my husband was in Memphis, he visited the St. Jude facility. What an impact it made on him. Your sister sounds like a remarkable person - my prayers to her and her family.

OSB, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU GRANDMA-TO-BE!!!

CAPH, you need not explain the phone thing. I get it. I've done the same thing. It's how we protect ourselves. I hope this week you get the answers (and plan) you need to go forward. Just know that I, and others, are thinking of you.

dwooddon: Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Lucy, I am SO glad your daughter and her friends are okay - what a nightmare to get such a call.

OWJ: The child you and your DH adopt, will be the luckiest kid in the world!

It's been a week from hell. First, my FIL was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Then, the following morning, my MIL fell getting out of the shower, hit her head and fractured her arm. The break was bad, required surgery and now she had pins, plates and rods in and on her arm.

Next, my daughter, who was expecting our first grandchild had a miscarriage. So, between helping my in-laws I've been trying to provide comfort for her tears.

Finally, my step-dad was told his c.t. scan showed a lung infection (treated aggressively for lung ca in 2001) so he'll have to have a titanium filter inserted in his vena cava so he can go off Coumadin (sp.?) in order to be treated with antibiotics. Thankfully, no sign of cancer at this time.

Whew, I realize the sun can't shine every day but I really, really need to catch a break.

Caph, warmest hugs!! I know you'll have the strength to get your family through this difficult time and hope the week brings optomistic news.
