Rave: Only a few more days until my downtown Chicago vacation.

Rave: Time with my parents- never thought they would make it to 60. Their 60th Wedding Anniversary is this week. They got married on a 3 day furlough in Dec. in Chicago. The photographer (my uncle) had to go get treated for frostbite hands after the ceremony. My father was a handsome blonde devil in his dress uniform. They borrowed all the bridal clothes, and couldn't be married on the altar (ceremony was in the outside vestible) because he wasn't Catholic. It's just as cold on their anniversary.

jorr, it's 14 degrees today and failing.

Rant: The beautiful church is no longer there- it was demolished as was most of the block it was on.

Rave: I did get my driver's license renewed after dealing with Cook County Motor Vehicle problems, MUCHO problems.
Not mine; theirs. 6 hours wasted on the only day I had to do this before the "right" place had computers all working. And then a 2 hour wait in mazes before my number came up for the test. All else done in less than an hour. Aren't you glad you live somewhere else!

Rant: The written test was hard. Polish and Mexican girls crying all over the place. More questions about changing DUI laws and levels and signs on moving vehicles etc. These are not even displayed in the Rules of the Road book. More trivia then the things that are evident in driving every day and that you NEED to know. Grrrrr!

Rant: Bureaucracy- this is supposed to be MY government, working for ME the citizen. NOT!

Rave: Generators and FreezeGuard units that let you know when temps go below freezing inside any enclosed space.

Rant: That you can't buy any temp units or Freezeguards that don't need an additional phoneline hook up. ANY entrepreneur out there who wants to invent one that will have calling capacity of 2 or 3 calls (all contained in the same one price unit)? you will be a zillionaire! It's possible now with strong cells and getting a network to support it on a one time fee basis.

Rave: Shared trips and activities instead of more "stuff" as gifts. I give out "this is good for one day at Six Flags with Grandma" sort of tickets.

Have a good weekend. Decorating, baking in the works for me.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Rant: ice (Sunday), ice storm (Sunday night), snow on top of that (Monday).
Rave: we didn't lose power as many people did.
Rave: power companies asking us to conserve electricity so no more transformers would go down.
Rant: people who had their Christmas lights on when we were supposed to be limiting power use.
Rave: no wind and bright sunshine (yesterday and today).

Belated condolences, Bonniebroad. Your brother's memorial service sounds like an appropriate tribute.

Rave(s) Great trip to Providence Place with daughter this week. Lots of Cristmas shopping done.
Spending weekend with daughter in Ct.and more shopping at West Farms Mall. Nothing like helping the economy along.
Love the season- taking youngest grandchild to see The Nutcracker next weekend. The boys said "yuck", but she can't wait!
May this season lift the spirits of those saddened by loss.

capecodshanty, I don't know how old your little grandchild is but I hope he/she will be more thrilled with "The Nutcracker" than my wee granddaughter was a couple of years ago. We got all dressed up, went to a beautiful old theater in Boston, sat down, and the ballet began!

I was enjoying it so much, but about ten minutes in, my just-six year old GD gently nudged me and said, "Granny, something's wrong! Nobody's talking ..." So I said, "Sweetie, that's how it's supposed to be. But just wait, it will get much better." I let her crawl onto my lap for a better view, she snuggled down for about ten minutes, then gently nudged me ... "Granny?" I said "Yes?" She whispered, "It's not getting any better ..."

(MORAL: Never let your grandchild watch The Nutcracker Barbie Movie before she sees the real thing! )

Rant: My youngest son and his WONDERFUL wife are getting a divorce. He revealed this two nights prior to Thanksgiving. Of course, that meant a very somber holiday. I've had several sleepless nights over this, as I don't understand it! They seemed so in love! She 'just doesn't want to be married at this point in her life'.

Rant: ...that means we are having to assist DS financially. He is a full time student until the end of May...when he was planning on going to Grad School...but now he will have to get a full time job instead.

Rant: They had ff tickets/accomodations (hers) to New York (son's dream) to check out Rutgers for grad school, but that's off now....what a waste of potential travel!

Rave: I've finally had some sleep!

Rave: Christmas parties tonight! I'm not the proverbial 'social butterfly', but it often seems that events come in pairs...either making me choose or requiring a 'juggling act'!

Rant: Dread the Christmas tree decorating. It's sitting in the living room awaiting me now! It's alittle more than the usual dread as my joints, esp. hands have been bothering me lately! The right one is slightly swollen today. Guess I'm going to have to break down and go to the Dr. soon, but being a PT, I don't hold out much hope of significant relief...have tried Celebrex and Vioxx and do not want to take corticosteroids...ugh!

I'm SOooo sorry to hear of the loss of the child and the all broken bones!

A friend lost her son a few years ago, just prior to HS graduation (my youngest was also in the class). It was so unexpected and they never did really come up with a cause...just dropped dead...supposedly asthma, but he'd had no prior incident or history!

Rave: Happy for you jorr!! I do LOVE a deal!!

Bonniebroad: I'm sorry for your loss!
But it sounds like you had a most beautiful and remarkable service! Hope you can focus on all those good memories.

JJ5: Hurray! I'm so glad for your parents successfull marriage! It don't come easy! Ha! I'm proud for you and them!

I don't really understand the reason you were having to be tested again...did I miss something? Glad you made it though!

Have a good week!

Another little rant:

This week on Fodors, I stumbled across a post of a house with Christmas lights and it had been coordinated with music...it was quite spectacular! I got off the site in haste,so DH could look something up, but I cannot find the site again....anyone know what I'm talking about??

BonnieBroad- that's a wonderful story!! Fortunately she has not yet seen the Barbie version- (she's just 4/12).Her older brothers had seen a local rendition,on a field trip for their elementary grades , which was why the "yuck" comment! I will read her the story before we go, and let her know it is told in "dance"!

Rave--Had a really nice trip to Seattle last weekend. Saw old friends, family, and played tourist.

Rant--Son ended up with bronchitis.

Rave--Went with girlfriends to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert the other night. Great show!

Rave--Going to the Singing Christmas Tree show tonight with the family.

Rant--No Christmas tree yet. Did not get back from Seattle in time to do it while it was dry out. Now trying to find the time.

Rave--My rants are minor.

Bennie--So sorry to hear about that child. Truly a parents worst nightmare.

Wagonwheel--Sending best wishes for your dad. Glad that another doctor was able to put his mind at peace a bit.

Bonnie--What a sweet tribute to your brother.

JJ5--Congrats to your parents!

OSB--Sorry to hear about your son and DIL. Just remember, you never know and things may still work out. Still, I can imagine that it must be very stressfull for everyone. BTW, that house/light show site is at http://members.cox.net/transam/lights.wmv The music is from the orchestra I saw the other night!

Greetings all my FFR&R'ers ~

Statia dear ~ I think you are incredibe. I wish you such enjoyment this spring with your Mom & sis. Glad to see you 'found' and booked your Rome bungalow! I think what you are doing is beautiful. Safe journey.

CAPH ~ Thinking of you and how it went after your DH's last chemo, and how he held up last weekend... sending him (and you!) strength.

Wagonwheel ~ Sorry for your Dad, and the doctor that stated what he did. I am sending you Dad good health wsihes and his doctor a bed side manner and some good old fashioned common sense!

No rants or raves really, just a thought... Ever answer someone's post and then realize that you kind of missed the boat on what their question was? There was a post on the Europe board that was asking Fodorites ages 30's and 40's to answer where they have traveled to, I thought "Oh, this is a fun question, my DH and I are right in the middle of that age group, I'll answer" and my fingers starting flying on the keyboard.
But then after I posted I realized the OP put Europe in the header, and wanted to to know where in Europe only. Oops. I felt a little foolish.

I love those types of threads, where are you traveling to, where have you lived, I find it so interesting, I guess I just kind of 'went' with it, lol.

Peace to all.

A hug to those who need one.

So many were posting while I was getting tea and posting!

OSB ~ I am sorry! I hope it all works out for your DS. He is lucky to you have.

My cmcfong ~ Sweetie, Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Can't wait to hear all about it!

Bennnie ~ I am truly sorry about your friend's son. How tragic.

Tess ~ I SO know what you mean, our little Sophie, we can tell when one of us is not here, she is such a love, and acts differently, your word 'mopey' is a good one. Hope your DH didn't freeze too much in our city. Glad he will be getting warmed by you soon!

Bonniebroad ~ what a beautiful tribute for your brother, again you and yours are in my prayers and thoughts. What a hard time of year to lose a loved one. A hug for you, my dear!

Rave: meeting with CaliNurse.

Rant: December is the busiest month at work, won't have as much time for Internet, will have to work during some days off.

Rave: I will be paid overtime, just imagine how many additional falafels, fondues and souvenirs I'll be earning

Rave: air, tour, hotel reservations are done, now I can take my time, relax, and search for everything else for upcoming March vacations!

Rant: not going anywhere till March...

Rave: hopefully Chanukah will get "unstapled" from other holidays, why can't they understand we are all different, and don't want to be a part of a political or religious "salad"?

Rave: no more rain in San Francisco!

BonnieBroad, BuffaloGirl: syber-hugs!

OldSouthernBelle, they are doing re-tests now every so many years, especially if your address changes counties (as mine did). But besides that they make EVERYONE who has had a ticket and not gone to traffic school for it, retest as well. It's stupid as most of the facilities are called "express" and don't have that capacity. So everyone is driving long distances etc. to get to a place that has it. Mine was the next county over. I had a traffic ticket for going 37 in a 25 about 10 years ago. LOL! a total farm trap. But that and the county change probably kicked me out into the written test pool.

Divorce is so common. I'm sorry for your son. Be especially kind to him. We see many instances here of very short marriages now. Even less than 2 years length. Don't you wonder why people do get married when their psyche and belief systems are totally mired in the root belief that they, themselves, are "entitled" to individual happiness and maximum growth? Marriage isn't necessarily on the same page as that even in the very best of times.

So easy to do, so hard to undo that kind of hurt. It's an epidemic with wonderful young women, I'm afraid.

Losing a child, IMHO, is the worst thing. No words really work but being there in quiet is good too. We've had several friends lose children. One also just dropped during CrossCountry at 17. One that was the best hockey player I every saw at 16, od'd at 20. They are very missed.

Sorry about your brother, Bonniebroad.

You have all given me renewed energy to get the decorating going. I'm starting tonight.

JJ5, congrats to your parents and their 60th.

Yes, I'm glad I do not live in Cook County. I lived in Bexar County, Pop. over a million for several years and everything like that was more difficult.

My parents had one of those temp. alert things hooked up to their phone line when they use to winter in Arizona. It did not require a second phone line. Maybe you should research it more and find the brand which they had. I don't remember the brand.

Good health to everyone, and sorry for those who do not have good health.

I'm still going to post when that drug delivery comes about an hour from now. Opps! I mean Prescription drug delivery.

Tiff,
My husband LOVES your city! The company he works for is located there so he travels to Minn./St. Paul every few months. He stays downtown and 'has' to dine out with others every night--last night was Ruths Chris. Poor guy--the kids and I had leftovers sloppy joes, on the other hand. LOL.

Rave: Contracts are signed - we've sold our Brooklyn condo.

Rant: Closing date is Jan 13th, and we have no idea where we're going to live then....not even sure if we're going to stay in NY.

?: BF hopes we really like Sydney
