The Four Seasons Hualalai on the Big Island is my favorite place on earth. Yet, we haven't been back in two years and don't plan on it anytime soon. Part of the reason is the Surf, Sand and Stars BBQ and the other theme buffets. I'm not a buffet person. When I'm running around (or lounging) in the hot sun all day, in skin-baring clothes, what I want for dinner is maybe a small piece of fish, or a pasta dish, or a salad, and a few cocktails. In the early days at this FS, the Beach Tree restaurant was a great place to grab a drink, feed the kids and watch some hula dancers. No longer. Now, they begin setting up the whole buffet in the afternoon, the smell of sterno seeps through the air, and it just feels crowded and unpleasant. I gather from the responses that there are many buffet-lovers, and it IS a beautiful spot. I just hate how the FS has become so popular, with the buffets and conventions and stuff. Last visit, there was some Quota Club party going on with loud music blasting into our room until midnight. So many weddings and buffets that you had to dodge the little carts with all the equipment. I'm glad the property is so popular and successful, but I miss the days (like in 1997-1998) when it was quiet, almost sleepy, and the only buffet was a breakfast thing that was very easy to avoid.

From what I gather from the Hualalai concierge, there are no other buffets on the schedule for this year other then the daily morning breakfast buffets and the Sand Stars Buffet on Saturday nights. So if you hate buffets , you are now safe to return.
