Fort Jackson to Charleston - Driving time?

Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get to Charleston from Fort Jackson, South Carolina? Once in Charleston, is there a good route to drive for sightseeing purposes? Will only have minimal time to do this, maybe stopping to tour one of the antebellum homes. Or should we park somewhere and walk around? Can anyone suggest a good walking tour? Thanks for any replies.

Hi Sandi - It will take 1 1/2-2 hours from Ft. Jackson to the "Holy City" of Charleston ( as known by the locals). Once there I would suggest parking in the old section of the city and walking. There are several good walking tours and a carriage tour which is nice. You can get info at the Visitors Center which, I believe is either on King or Meeting St. A number of the old homes are open to the public - if you have time for only one, I would suggest the Heyward Washington house. Skip walking through the Slave Market, other than just getting a glimpse of it for historical value - it's full of junk shops. The very best way to see Chas is to just wander around the narrow streets - you should be able to get a self-guided tour brochure from the Visitors Center. Don't know what time of year you are going, but it can be very hot and humid from now through the summer - and crowded. Don't miss Whitepoint Gardens - along the waterfront. Much to see and most charming. I don't live there but love to visit. Have a great time.

Bushmama,

Thank you for your informative response. I will be traveling with a friend in about two weeks to see her daughter graduate from boot camp at Fort Jackson. I was hoping we would have a little time to do some sightseeing, also. Charleston appeared to be the closest major destination. I live in central Missouri. We'll be leaving on Memorial Day and will be back home on Friday the 4th. I'm thinking it will take about 16 hours total driving time, not including rest stops and meals. Have never been to South Carolina. I love to take trips, though, and my goal is to visit every state at least once. I guess a lot of people have this same goal.

Thanks again for your thoughtful advice. Any other information would be welcomed and appreciated.
