There is a Safeway in Kihei, just off Pi'Ilani Highway.

I don't think Whole Foods has invaded Hawaii yet.

google is a wonderful thing. These links might be helpful.

I should note that Costco is not quite in the area you want but it is not that far away near the airport. You can stop on your way out of the airport.

There are 3 major markets in Kihei - Star Mkt, Foodland, & Safeway. There are Farmer's Markets in many locations over the island...you just need to seek them out and determine the best for yourself. I prefer the Farmers Mkt in Kahului where Long's is. From Wailea to there it's only about a 20 - 30 minute drive. Have fun!

Whole Foods will be opening later this year in the Maui Mall where the Star Market used to be. They have not announced an opening date yet.

In addition to Safeway, there's also a Food Lion - right in Kihei on the main business road and a bit cheaper than Safeway, IMO.

Never heard of Food Lion. If you mean Foodland, their selection is much smaller and the prices are generally higher than Safeway. I only shop there for convenience, as in on my way home, or for sale items. Economies of scale: Safeway is a huge company with a lot of resources. I have never found the meats at Foodland or Star Market to be as fresh as Safeway. If you want local beef, you can find that at Long's Drugs.

The Safeway is very large and wel stocked with local items like ahi poke and native fish. I like Star Market because of its smaller size and variety of local and general products.
When I shop at Star It feels more "Hawaiian".

Make sure you take a moment to get a discount card - really adds up. Although I am a fan of WholeFoods I have been blown away by the fantastic seclection of meat and fish at Safeway. Farmers markets are always fun! Look up the dates

Don't forget to pick up some POG (Pineapple, Orange & Guava juices)for rum drinks. It's delicious. I can't find it anywhere at home.

Be prepared for sticker shock, 2x cost of mainland. Costco prices there same as here. Head to markets for fresh fish, but better beef at Costco than grocery.
