CatsEyes (and others) - I took my 2 cats on a plane to bring them home, and luckily they could travel with me (used sedatives).

However, I don't think that saying "drive, drive, drive" is a universal answer. My cats hate the car and cry non-stop when we are only going 10 minutes to the vet. It is so bad that I now use a mobile vet who comes to my home for their annual shots. Imagine how insane they (and I) would be if I had to take them on a cross-country drive!

I'm just saying, that there are risks to either option, but I don't think any of us should assume there is one right answer.

Jor,

I do understand what you're saying. When I was growing up, I had a 1/2 dauhsand (?), 1/2 poodle dog and she went everywhere with me. When she died 2 years ago, it was one of the hardest things for me. I do understand that pets mean a lot to people and can be great for people (elderly, people in hospitals, with cancer, etc...).

However, I do think some people cross that line and believe in their hearts and minds that their pet is a person. They treat their pet better than they treat their friends/family. And, that IMO is not right.

tio, most airlines if not all will not ship animals in the cargo hold in June, July, and August.

I think your point is moot.

Sunshinesue, your post also offended me.

katybug, animals shipped in cargo are lost and killed all the time. The Humane Society or PETA wanted the FAA to mandate airlines keep records of how many animals were either maimed or killed in cargo and the airlines said if they had to keep records, they would refuse to ship animals.

Even though animals are shipped all the time in cargo, these aren't pets. These are animals that have professional shippers freight them.

Sunshinesue -- you are mistaken -- my bulldog just informed me that he is too human!

Wow,
I didn't think this would cause such a commotion.
Anyway, I am grateful for all the different opinions I got.

I’ll keep you posted!

tio, American Airlines will NOT ship animals from May 15th through September 15th and will not take animals at all at night.

You will have to find another mode of transportation.

<Also, if the only way to ship him is cargo, I will have to do it now because most airlines warned me that they refuse to take animals after May because of high temperatures.>

If you ship him now, who will look after him until you move out to CA this summer???

tio, what exactly are you trying to accomplish here??

You said yourself that you don't want him to fly cargo, and turns out he can't in the summer anyway. People suggested you drive and you replied that he is too hyper. Then you go on to claim that he will drive the other airline passengers nuts if you take him on board the plane. (Lord, don't let me be on that flight) You have shot down every single idea yourself.

I don't see what this is achieving other than your own entertainment.

atilla, I think you answered your own question.

This is why some people should not have children and only have pets

Just kidding

I actually thought that this website is there for people to get opinions and suggestions on questions they have….
The fact that I am thinking out laud and throwing some of my concern related to the different ideas doesn’t necessarily mean that I don’t agree with any of the suggestions.

It seems to me that that most of you have your own interpretation of what you are reading (which is fine), you just have to be careful with the assumptions you make at the end - especially if you will be sharing those with everybody else.

If you see this chat as entertainment so be it…I still have a dog to move to CA.

Tio, I'm about over you too.

With over 50 responses, you have received very sincere suggestions and opinions.

Most of us dog lovers see only one good option - drive. From your response, that seems to be not convenient for you.

The second best option would be to take him on the plane with you - but you don't seem to like that idea either.

The very last option (IMO) would be to ship him as cargo. My dogs will NEVER be shipped as cargo. But, then you add that you are keeping the dog with you for your pleasure even though he can go earlier to CA and you want to keep him with you until summer.

That is simply not possible. Because of the many problems airlines have had with dogs damaged or killed during transport they have stopped allowing shipping of dogs as cargo during the summer months.

The only other option still out there is for you to hire someone to drive the dog cross-country.

I was invested in this thread at the beginning, but have been frustrated as it has gone on.

By all means, do what is best for you...not a DOG! I have no idea what that would be for you, but many of us wouldn't need 2 seconds to decide what we would do that would be best for the dog.

Good luck on your move.

tio, you are making no sense.

You will not drive him and you can't ship him.

What would you like us to suggest?

A chaffeur driven limo?

Glue wings on to Rover and teach him to fly?

See if Jeanie can twinkle her nose and zap him to California?

Put him on a train?

Well tiovtcheva, IF you are serious I wish you luck with your decision. I understand the concern as my dog is my baby and I have sacrificed huge $$$ and time to keep him happy and healthy.

The concern you have is most understandable, it is your approach that leaves one wondering. Good luck to your pup!

katybug, And some people treat their children better than their other family members and friends. You just illustated my point about this intense bond in many people.

We shipped 4 cats from the UK to the US using BA, All of them even the 2 very timid cats were fine, just very pleased to see us.

We used a good pet relocation company and they were extremely well taken care of. They allowed us to put 2 small cats who hate to be parted in one carrier (could have held a medium sized dog!) and the 2 who need their space in separate carriers.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat!
What was the choice? Try to re-home them in the UK? I'm not overly sentimental about my cats - they don't call me Mommy'- but I took on the responsibility of them and flying was the best way to get them to our destination.

Good luck to all of you and your pet's travels

Aren't differences grand?

There are:
a) non-dog people,

b) people who say and think they are dog people...but really aren't (as defined by Category C folks) and

c) fanatics who are absolutely crazy about their dogs.

By the way, I fall into Category C.

Different strokes for different folks.

What's right, wrong, normal, strange, etc. is defined by the person.

Kind of remainds me about different types of travelers -

Those who plan every second and those that follow their noses.

Those who have lots of luggage because they keep thinking about "just in case" scenarios and those who think it's a badge of honor to swoosh out the jet with their rolling carryon and and get a head start on all the other fools on the plane.

The trick is finding the right traveling companion for you...and pet compatiblity too.
