They? No. YOU are supposed to take out the items that are not allowed!

Re: amount of time...What does your airline carrier suggest? I would arrive with no less than 3 hours, but some things you need to actually figure out for yourself.

I know that the rules must be followed.
All i am asking is this:
Are the screeners taking everything out of the carry on luggage?
Yes, I know that we are not suppossed to carry items that are on the prohibited list.
But not everyone follows the rules

It's not clear, but I think you're really trying to ask: are the screeners emptying out all carryon bags to check for banned substances? In other words, do they physically go through each and every carryon and remove every item to search for banned items?
Am I correct?

If you're flying on Continental, your carryon will be subject to both initial and gate screening, and any unpermitted items will be removed.
If you're flying on BA or AA (or probably UA) the question is moot because NO carryon bags are permitted.
Check with your airline. Not complying with their rules runs you the risk of delay or denied boarding.

Melissa - I think this is the confusion. In the past, they took out and returned items to your carry-on. In this case, you can not even carry them on, regardless of inspection. You have to put them in your checked luggage or will be forced to find something else to do with them.
Part of the confusion is that these regulations are less than 24 hours old and a response to an identified threat. Just like after 9/11, they will likely be modified over next days and months.

If you cannot take a "carry-on" - there will be nothing to remove.
As I understand it, woman are even being asked to remove their lipsticks and toss them if going in/out of London. Depending on which airline, you may not even be able to carry a purse. If I were flying in the next week to London, I'd get one of those wallets with a shoulder strap, put minimum money in, one bankcard, one credit card, one passport, one other id. That's it.
Not saying you, Melissa, but I just don't understand why people in general want to play games and think they will be "the exception." That's what slows everybody down. Think of how much more quickly flights could be boarded/disembarked if everyone just walked on unencumbered. But I do feel sorry for the flight attendants (flying lipstickless, that is) and the moms trying to bring wee ones. (Although, I did hear on the TV that one of the people arrested was a young mother who was going to use baby formula to smuggle her explosive.)

If you can't follow the rules don't go.
You may know you're not a terrorist - but no one else does - or rather that you;re not an idiot pawn (as they've used before) and which in your case sounds quite likely.
How hard is this to understand? Just follow the rules - and donlt hold up hundreds of other people playing games. Or don't go.
