"Flumin Da Ditch" on the BI

I haven't done this and don't know what tour operation in Maui does it. However I did see something about it on the Travel channel.
Up in the mountains in Maui is a sophisticated concrete ditch network put in many years ago (late 1800's I think). These ditches or flumes supplied water to the sugar can fields. Now I understand you can ride in a small raft/kayak like boat with a guide. I looked fun on T.V. but that's all I know.
Hope this helps.

We've been to the BI a couple of times, and our friends just returned from there. They did "Flumin...", and said it was a big waste of time/money. The people were very nice, but the ride was just plain boring!
We had seen this and considered it, but after their experience...your time would be much better spent on another adventure.

Flumin the Ditch is taking a Kayak ride in the irrigation ditches that were made omn the Big Islan, not Mauai.(Hence BI)
Heard good and bad about it. Wanted to do it but did not get a chance while there. The 101 thinkgs to do on the BI has a write up and ad for it.

It's LOUSY. I did it two years ago with my then-13 year old dtr and 11 year old son. It is a way to raise money from something old and ugly on the Big Island...and a chance to teach a bit of history. 'da ditch consists of winding concrete 1/2 tunnels...and you go down in some sort of kayak-y thing. The brochures look fabulous, showing people having loads of fun getting splashed by waterfalls. We laughed about the false advertising later...the only 'waterfalls' we had was some water coming out of a rusty pipe onto us 1/2 way during the ride. Also, 80% of the ride is spent in the dark, listening to commands from the guide to duck your heads cuz you're entering creepy tunnels with ugly stuff hanging down from the ceilings...it's dark, damp and not a riveting ride at all. Once in awhile, you'll emerge into sunlight and see grass and trees but it's not pretty...the guide will point out the vegetation etc. Ho Hum for your kids, but my kids were enchanted with the cinnamon trees...he plucked a leaf and had us smell it...he pointed out some interesting trees and stuff...but the ride was someone's ingenious idea to make us of something 'hanging around'. We liked the Waip'o on Horseback better...and this year we did the Waterfall hike. Waip'o on Horseback was a lot more adventurous...and my kids this year wanted to do the donkey thing, but we chose the waterfall thing instead. Donkey thing might have been better, in retrospect....glad I could help you avoid this lousy lousy fake-advertising "ride"...
