Hi,

I am traveling to the Keys next month with my boyfriend who is from Miami. He claims to "been there and done that" in the Keys, so I am looking for something different and unique that maybe he hasn't experienced before. Mainly, I am looking for advice on where to stay, he says Key Largo, and hotels, he has stayed at all the major ones down there. I really like Ceecha, too bad they are closed until December-- but something similar to that would be amazing. Being from San Francisco I am not too familiar with the area, so any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Budget and how much time do you have?

I think 2-3 nights, we are flexible though. And probably in the $200-$300 per night range... though we would go a little higher and obviously lower.

My wife and I like this place, Kona Kai Resort in Key Largo. It might be just slightly above your budget but call and talk to them. they often have specials that don't get on their website. We have stayed in a 1 BR suite which was very nice.

It is on the bay side so wonderful sunsets. Very laid back and very romantic.

Look at Casa Morada and the Moorings. Both are near Cheeca and so near the great Islamorada restaurants. If you both scuba dive, there is an underwater hotel that would be fun for a night. And for something completely different - the nautilimo! http://www.nautilimo.com/

I would go straight to Key West... Theres no way he could have stayed at all the hotels there... choose a smaller more liberal inn or B&B and get on and near the water for activities... The characters and off personalities of the people who live there are priceless... stay away from the touristy and hang out with the locals... I guarantee you and BF will create new memories to share... have fun!

If you're not needing all the amenities of a full-fledged resort, and really want a place to chill, I highly recommend Largo Lodge. It's across the highway from Pennekamp state park. The screened porches and lush gardens are a great place to mix up some margaritas and cook up some local fish. They don't accept kids, which makes it good for couples. It's also reasonably priced. It's like visiting Florida the way it was back in the 60's. I love this place for kicking back, and only a short drive to the main part of town for restaurants and the bar scene.

Thank you for the responses. I really like the Kona Kai Resort, and once we know our dates for sure I will definitely call to check on deals. One place that looks nice and pretty reasonable is the Key Largo Grande Resort- any feed back on that?

Have you thought about camping at KOA or renting a sailboat at the marina in Key West. Renting a sail boat and staying on it for the weekend can be really romantic ;-)

I was also going to suggest the Kona Kai. Lots of great places in Key West.

It is still way too hot in South Florida to consider camping in anything other than an RV with AC.

I agree with the Moorings and Casa Morada.
