Florida in March 2009?

My husband is a musician in a major symphony orchestra. They are booked on a 6-day tour to Florida with Pinkas Zuckerman from March 9-16. They will play concerts in Miami, Orlando and West Palm Beach. We are planning to go a day early and stay over for a few days after the tour. Are we nuts to try to make a vacation out of this trip during Spring Break??

You're not nuts as long as you expect most tourist things to be packed and expensive.

Heck no, you should stay and enjoy FL. The weather is still not too hot. I would suggest though to enjoy the natural beauty of FL instead of doing the theme park thing. There are wonderful springs to swim and rivers to canoe. Bird watching in the Everglades and nature preserves where you'll see plenty of alligators.

My wife and I go to Palm Beach every March, and we love it. We come from the Baltimore/DC area and it doesn't seem too crowded to us. And the weather is much, much nicer. Actually, I think a number of the southeast Florida towns have made efforts to crack down on spring breakers, and it's much more tame than it used to be. Cancun, South Padre, etc. are crazier from what I hear.

Thanks all for your advice. To thorspecken, what you said about enjoying the natural beauty is exactly what we have in mid. My other-in-law lived in Boca Raton for many years before she died in 1991, so we used to spend a lot of time in Florida. We really love the interior, with all the rivers and springs and wildlife. And Wakulla Springs near Tallahassee was a favorite stop on the drive from Texas to the Florida Gold Coast. Can't wait to go again!

Florida is wonderful in March (I'm from PA). As noted above, consider the Everglades and possibly the keys. There is very little impact in these places from spring break.

GBC, I haven't been to the keys, but I'm guessing that you are not talking about Key West - from what I hear, the usual crowd there would make spring breakers look like amateurs!
