Dear Janice: Tommy is not kidding. It is so humid that the air is similar to breathing in steam. Some people truly love the heat and it doesn't seem to bother them but this is jungle "wet" heat. You might save some money but as school would still be out I doubt if the lines would be much shorter. It also rains almost every afternoon and then "steams" off until the bugs come out. Have you ever heard of "no see'ems"? The best time to go to Florida is in the fall or winter and for good reason. Friends of mine go every summer and literally stay in the water the whole time. Water park and ocean fiends. Even so, hope your lungs are in great condition.

janice -

are you referring to theme park visits, eg Walt Disney World?

Last 2 weeks of August is my favorite time to visit.

Crowds are noticeably less than June or July. Yet, there is enough "action" going on, so that parades, fireworks, late closings, etc, are still in full swing. I once went in late June, never again .. I'll stick to August.

Be aware that the 1 week prior to Labor Day, things may get a bit TOO slow. e.g., MGM & MK may start closing at 7-ish pm on weekdays (Epcot is always open till 9pm).

Yes, it is hot & humid ... gives it a very tropical feel. Wouldn't want to have to dress up for work in that weather, but it's fine for vacations.

re Bugs - they're "not allowed" at Disney World! seriously, they seem to have a very effective pest control program. I've NEVER had a problem with critters in the 8+ years I;ve been going there (in August).

I would NEVER go to WDW in August. I just returned from a long weekend trip there two days ago and it was miserable. I literally had sweat running down my body when I wasn't even exerting myself. (And no, I'm not a large person who always sweats when sitting still). I think my favorite month to go is either September or October. You can get better on-site room rates those months as well. WDW is never "dead" even if the parks close earlier. When there's fewer people, you spend much less time waiting in lines and more time doing things so that it doesn't matter if the parks close earlier. Have fun.

Janice-
Please don't type in all caps. It looks like you're yelling, and it's hard for us to read.

My family hs been to Orlando past two years in late August (two weeks prior to Labor Day) and it has been great! We got a time-share during this week for this reason. Yes it is hot - but it's Florida. Kids in Fla & several surrounding states go back to school in mid-august, so cuts down on crowds. We have never had a problem with long lines or excessive crowds during this time period, & have been to both WDW & Universal/Islands of Adventure during this time. Highly recommend you check out Deb Wills website www.wdwig.com, unofficial guide to WDW, LOTS of info from many contributors who all LOVE WDW. PS Do NOT miss Disney Quest, your son will be perfect age to enjoy this "virtual reality" haven at Downtown disney - but this is often crowded because of its popularity with local kids.

We actually went in August of this year for one week. (It was mid August)

Lines were not bad.
Heat and Humidity was bad, but not totally unbearable. Plenty of $15 water bottles with fans attached for sale at Disney parks.

Having lived in FL for 25 years, IMHO the best months to visit are May and November (excluding holiday weekends, of course). That's when you'll have the best combination of the fewest people, the least rain/humidity, and the best room rates (especially Nov).
