Flea Markets in New York and San Francisco - fact or fiction???

Are there still great flea markets in San Francisco and New York?
Where can I find them?
I will be travelling in these areas between 24th of April and 8th May - I will be in both destinations on a Saturday.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There are still some pretty good flea markets in NYC. I can't speak for San Francisco. But I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

Ruby, be sure to click all three tabs on the link that Rhea sent you. The Antiques Garage has always been my favorite, but last time I was in NYC, it seemed like a lot of vendors from there had moved over to Hell's Kitchen. At any rate, the markets are fun and you might find something you like. Be sure to get there early, or an antique dealer (who for sure will be there early) may buy just what you were wanting. And take cash (although there are ATMs nearby).

I'm certainly not an expert, and maybe didn't look hard enough, but about 1 year ago my sister and I drove from Reno to SF to check out a huge flea market we had heard about.
That's an entire day of my life I will never get back. All crap. All junk.
I had been hoping to find unique one-of-a-kind pieces, or artsy fun stuff. Instead I just found lots of crap still in the plastic bags they were manufactured in from Mexico or Taiwan.
I will mention however that the produce and candy sections were incredible.
If you find a real flea market in SF, let me know. Because I'd love to go to one!

There's a flea market in Brooklyn now that's supposed to be very good. http://www.brownstoner.com/brooklynflea/ A lot of the vendors that used to be in Manhattan moved there.

There are several flea markets in Manhattan depending on what you're looking for. http://www.ny.com/shopping/flea/

Isn't that "flea market" by definition (I am not a fan )

The one truly good flea market near SF is the Alameda Flea Market(at the old navy station). It is on the first Sunday of each month which looks like you will miss. It is a collectibles and antique market and there is some good stuff to be found. No tube socks anywhere

There is one at Ashby, but this is more a "tube socks" type

Also I hear a large one in San Jose.

If you're looking for antiques, maybe you want to go to the shops in Petaluma?

The flea market in Brooklyn the mclaurie mentions is quite good depending on what you're looking for. I visited it a few months ago; it felt like half of the vendors were selling vintage/used clothing---the other half were artists/jewelry makers. Not a lot of antiques that I recall.

What were you hoping to find at the market? That might help us give other recommendations.
