Flamingo or Tropicana Las Vegas
I am looking for budget accommodation in Las Vegas and unfortunely the dates I am staying there are smack in the middle of a convention week in early November. I have a promo price offered to me at the Flamingo in a room without a view.(why they would offer a promo price in the middle of a convention week I'm not sure). The price for a room at the Tropicana is $20 cheaper and is in one of the tower rooms(the best of the 3 types).
I would like to take up the offer at the Flamingo due to its location and generally the reviews I've read are a bit better than the Tropicana. Is there anything I should be wary of about recieving this promo rate as I am assuming I will receive a room of the lowest quality(if there is such a thing). I guess the main thing is that the room is quiet and clean . Does anyone have any thoughts about which place to choose.
Thanks

The Flamingo location blows away the Tropicana's. As far as hotelsgo the Tropicana is old. Not that the Flamingo is far behind but at least you can walk out of the Flamingo right into the Bellagio, Paris, the Mirage etc. I would definetely go with the Flamingo.

I want to go to Vegas in November, maybe during Thanksgiving, and thinking of Tropicana - yes, on a budget. To my surprise the search for "Tropicana, Las Vegas" brought up only this post. I've been to Vegas several times, but never made it this far south. Is it worth it to stay in this area to explore Luxor, NY NY, MGM, and whatever else in that corner? I will have 3 days, one of them will be the Dam and Ethel M. Most likely I will continue going to Vegas once in 1-2 years.

you can get some great opinions at vegaswatch.com, under hotel reviews, or check out cheapovegas.com for good reviews as well. if all you're looking for is a clean room, stay at the flamingo, the location is MUCH better, it being sort of central strip. By the way, both have excellent pools.

I guess I'm alone in liking the Tropicana.
For me it's charm is
- Uber-cheap rooms, with all of the old Vegas kitch without having to go downtown.
-Slightly southerly (?) location as it's closer to the Luxor, (which I think has one of the better all night cafes), NYNY's roller coaster and Mandalay Bay.
- Great pools one of which is open 24/7, a rarity on the strip
- Pan island decor. My room was borderline Tiki-licious, complete with mirrored ceiling & walls. With rattan & bamboo detailing. How can you not like that?
I thought my room was reasonably quiet and clean.

here's cheapovegas' blurb about flamingo:
This used to be a top-notch resort about 15-20 years ago, but it's definitely showing signs of wear. It's not quite as spectacular as the newer mega-resorts elsewhere on the Strip, but that can mean a good value for those among us who are just looking for a decent room in a great location.

and what they say about the trop:
Yet another victim of Las Vegas' out-of-control 1990's growth, the Trop used to be the only place in town where you'd have even a glimmer of a chance of seeing young and pretty people. But once the Mirage and its ilk came to town, suddenly this South Strip joint didn't seem all that fancy. Nonetheless, it's still a got a great pool, and you can get a decent room for cheap

Thank you, guys, I have more time to think... have a nice weekend, see you on Monday.
As for Flamingo, yes, I agree, the location can't be beat, been there, loved it, want to try something different this time.
Mirrored ceilings? Hey, I'll be there with my husband! I'll play the role of a call girl if needed

I just returned from four nights at the Flamingo and I liked my stay there much better than the Luxor, Riviera, Monte Carlo, and yes, even Rio! Of course the location can't be beat, and the pool and garden area absolutely lovely, but our room was also wonderful. I paid $55 per night for a 28th floor room with two queen beds, loveseat, two easy chairs, and a wonderful view of the strip. Yes, I reserved my room in advance to get that rate. When we checked in, we received coupons for free drinks and 2 for 1 buffets. I was a little hesitant to stay there, and maybe I was just super lucky to get such a nice room (I know there MUST be "bad" rooms), but considering my worst experience by far was the 40 minute check-in line, I'd stay there again immediately!
