First time to Hawaii, going in June 2014!

We are planning our first trip to Hawaii, June 2014! We are going with friends who have been a couple times, once on a cruise and another with friends. We think we want to stay in Maui or Oahu. I am working with my friend Jeanne on this. We would like to rent a house. We have 6 people total so would need 3 bedrooms or desire 3. Anyone rented a house between $2-3,000 for the week (saturday to satureday). Or any other recommendations? Thought I would ask! Thanks. Beth

There are posts in here on this - and most recommend checking on VRBO. Also check various webpages for the town/area/islands you want to visits. You could also consider renting a condo(s) - so I would not limit myself to just a house/home.

At $300 to $400 a night - you should be able to do fine.

For a week on O'ahu, I would look at either the North Shore or the Kailua area. Waikiki is where most of the hotels are, and you could do a condo there, but i don't think there are many that have 3 bedrooms.

I've used VRBO several times and had good results. In 07 we rented this house http://www.vrbo.com/77614 it is not beachfront, short walk to the beach. there is a paved bike/walking path on the North Shore which is nice. when searching on VRBO, You can filter rentals by location, and # of bedrooms.

Summer is a busy travel time, so it is not too early to choose and book your lodgings. I would try to make my decisions asap, especially if you want a specific location and/or beachfront.

We're renting this condo in Wailea in March:

It should fit in your budget.

I love Hawaii, and hope you will too. Sorry don't know about renting homes (I usually go solo and stay in a hotel or condo apartment).

There are few houses for rent on Maui. Those that are rentals are VERY expensive. Most 3BR condos have one master suite plus two smaller bedrooms; these may also come with only a single parking space. Sometimes a single place is 'too much togetherness' too. I'd look for three 1 BR units in a single condo complex.

In summer, consider all of Maui -- both West and South. If you plan to visit sights across the island, South Maui is more convenient because it is physically closer and it has 4-lane highway all the way. West Maui has a single 2-lane access road.

Maui has a good selection of condos, hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, but nothing like the nightlife variety of Honolulu. Maui has more easy access beaches and better sea life.

Think about flights too. We look for nonstops on widebody aircraft. We use Hawaiian Airlines for interisland flights. If you are coming from farther than the west coast of the mainland, be prepared to need a day to get on Island Time. One week will FLY BY!

ChiSue, what do you mean by easy access beaches? Easy to get to by driving? Ease of entry for snorkeling? Accessible to actually get to the beach for those with mobility issues?
