First time in San Diego
My wife and have plan to stay in the San Diego area for a week. We will spend four nights at the Hyatt in La Jolla and four nights at at Rancho Valencia, a bit furhter north. We plan to see the zoo/sea world but are interested in the following:
1. other things you have done in San Diego which have been memorable.
2. quiet, relaxing beaches in the area
3. any other information which might add to the San Diego experience.
Thank you!

Just back from MY first visit to San Diego, and recommend the following: Balboa Park--Zoo, Timmerman Art Museum (free), Museum of Man, any other museum in Balboa that interests you, Rose Garden; Wild Animal Park, Horton Plaza (eat at Marie Callendars before 5:30 and you get a meal and slice of pie for $6, then get parking validated!), Coronado Bridge, Coronado del Mar Hotel, San Diego Mission, Cabrillo Nat Monument (absolutely closes at 5:00, the best time to be there for the view of the harbor), Scripps Busch Aquarium (no shows like Sea World, but MUCH more education), Scripps Beach in La Jolla, Torrey Pines Beach (go early on a weekday and you'll have a lot more quiet)

I live in San Diego and agree with the above messages. If you want a break from the city and attractions then do the mountain loop. It is an easy 1/2 day trip. Drive east on I-8 to Pine Valley. Exit there and then drive north through Cuyamaca to Julian ( our apple capital ). Then drive west back towards San Diego. It is pretty scenic and a change of pace. You can do it in reverse order if you wish. BTW, Wild Animal Park is a must see.

We stayed in La Jolla a couple of years back, and I'm fairly certain it was at the Hyatt.
If so, you will be near a place called the Elephant Bar which is kind of a fun place. But the really neat deal was a mexican restaurant close to the hotel and the Elephant Bar. Four of us ate there elegantly (and cheaply) and they even made the guacamole at tableside, to your individual taste!

I lived in San Diego for 8 years and owned a business named The Ultimate Dining Guide to San Diego, so I'd like to make some recommendations for dining spots.
Judging by your choice of accommodation, you like to experience the nicer places around. Pacifica Del Mar restaurant in the Del Mar Plaza (downtown Del Mar) is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere...incredible ocean view, superb seafood and lovely atmosphere (yet can dress casual). Also in that plaza is Epazote which i recommend - really good southwestern food (also with a view).
In La Jolla, you must have breakfast at the Pannikin. There are several around but my favorite is on Fay Avenue - artsy and low-key where you can sit under the trees with your latte and my favorite scones. (there's another Pannikin on Cove overlooking the ocean if you want a view - a little more formal than the Fay Ave location).
PaneVino in the gaslamp district is excellent Italian and Casa De Bandini is my favorite Mexican place in Old Town, which is a lot of fun to visit and browse around the square. Casa De Bandini is outdoor dining in the garden with strolling mariachi players. There's usually about an hour wait so put your name down first then wander around the shops.
In La Jolla, there's an excellent Italian restaurant named Sante on Herschel Street (say hello to the owner, Tony for me), and you MUST go to George's on Prospect Street - they have a rooftop cafe with a panoramic view across the ocean - great for lunch!
Do be sure to visit North County - starting in Del Mar - and drive up the coast...beautiful beaches and more "artsy" atmosphere.
And if you like sushi....E Street Alley (on E Street in the Gaslamp district) is the best I've ever tasted (it's the restaurant part of a nightclub, which is a really fun spot to visit too)
Have a great time. Bon appetit!
