Finger Lakes Region, NY

My husband and I thought of exploring the Finger
Lakes regions this fall in New York State. Is it worth the trip and where are some reasonably priced but nice accommodations?

Yes, it's worth the trip. Went there a few years ago and can't recall accommodations but no shortage of motels and hotels. Glen Echo very interesting and take boat trip on lake - very refreshing in summer. Towns on a human scale and people very friendly. Corning museum interesting.

I grew up in the Finger Lakes--Canandaigua to be exact. The lakes are beautiful and fairly close together, so you can see them without spending too much time driving. It is great wine country, and free tours of the wineries are plentiful. Naples on Canandaigua Lake has one and Hammondsport on I think Keuka Lake has one. Any tour book can give you more details. Be prepared for very cool nights in the Fall. Also, the trees will be beautiful at that time of year If you like baseball, Cooperstown is not too far away from that area, and Letchworth and Watkins Glen State Parks are beautiful with trails etc. Enjoy!!!

A terrific getaway area! I've lived and worked in this area for over 30 years.

Be sure to visit several of the wineries scattered along both Cayuga and Seneca lakes. Wine tasting is a great way to spend an afternoon. Include the Lamoreaux Landing vineyard on Seneca Lake and the Wagner Vineyard in Lodi in your travels. The latter has a spectacular restaurant.

You might want to consider some of the elegant B&Bs that line the lakes. The Westwind B&B near Taughannock Falls State Park on Rt89 is particularly attractive.

Some good web sites for further info are:

If you'd like more info e-mail me.

My husband grew up near Ithaca, a really great town full of interesting people and many art forms. Bully Hill winery in Hammondsport (I think that's the town it's in) is something to see--the fun and a little quirky atmosphere sets the mood for a great tour. The tour guides are full of really interesting, funny stories.
For more info on the area (my college roommate is also from the Ithaca area), e-mail me. Between the two of them, I should be able to steer you to some great places.
Keep in mind that it's very cold there. We joke with my in-laws, who still live in the area, that summer lasts one day-July 4th!

My wife and I recently spent a week in the FL region and we'd happily recommend Gothic Eves, a B&B, in Trumansburg between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. It's a great starting point for winery tours, lake boat rides, and exploring Watkins Glen and many other waterfalls in the area. It might get a little cool in November, however.

I lived in Ithaca for 7 years and go back whenever I can. Can give some very specific recommendations in Ithaca. For outdoor exploring, take the long walk between Upper and Lower Treman State Park in the gorge. On Saturday morning, spend an hour at the Farmer's Market. In Ithaca there are several B&B's and many hotels. Noteworthy: Taughannock Falls Inn and Greystone. N.B. If you like Thai food, eat dinner at Thai Cuisine, which, in my opinion, is the best Thai place ever.
