Finger Lakes and Niagra Falls

I am planning a trip this June to the Finger Lakes region and Niagra Falls. We have 7-10 days. We're thinking of flying into Ithaca and then traveling to Niagra Falls.
Have never been to this area and would very much appreciate any advice or suggestions as we explore our itinerary.
thank you, Kathy

Welcome to Fodor's Kathy! Who are the we? Why Ithaca for an airport to fly into? The closest (bigger) airports to fly into would be Buffalo, Rochester and Erie PA. With that much time in Upstate NY, be sure to visit the Corning Museum of Glass. If you have a girl(s), visit the Strong Children's museum in Rochester (huge doll collection). Also in Rochester is the George Eastman house which is a museum which has a lot of Kodak history.
The Finger Lakes are New York States wine region. Niagara (note spelling) Falls is beautiful from either side of the border. Some say the Canadian side is better. I hope that Canada starts letting US tourists back into their country sometime before your trip in June. If you have had your Covid vaccine, you should not have to quarantine in New York State.

you could fly into Rochester Airport for Finger Lakes(little over 39 miles) Ithaca Airport is a little over 36 miles.....and out of Buffalo Airport for Niagara Falls... a little bigger airports.....and more airlines would fly into Buffalo and Rochester..

All that said, if the once a day flight to Ithaca on AA (CLT) or Delta (DTW) works for you there is nothing wrong with flying into Ithaca and out of Buffalo.

Thank you for your reply. We will definitely check out Rochester airport.
The "we" are 3 girlfriends - 69 and 70yr old. No kids - we love wine, beautiful scenery such as waterfalls and gardens and exploring new areas of the country. Thanks for your suggestions of the Museum of Glass and Eastman house! We would love to to see the Canadian side of the Falls but not sure if the borders will be open by then. All 3 of us have received both vaccines!

Regarding NYS quarantine... the rules currently would require you to quarantine (or test out) upon arrival in New York as your trip would be beyond 90d since you got your 2nd vaccine. Hopefully there will be more data by then about how long the vaccine effect lasts and NY will update the requirements...

Congrats on getting your vaccines! My favorite winery in the region is Bully Hill in Hammondsport. It is owned by a Mr. Taylor who was sold out by his brothers. He is not allowed to even put his signature on the labels of his fine wine. So said the Supreme Court of New York. He says the wine with the Taylor name on it is "tank car wine" with no provenance as to where it comes from.
Another thing that might interest you would be a walk or bike ride along the old Erie Canal. I do remember stopping in the Naples area for a grape pie but it may be too early in the year to get one in June.
There are several nice B&B's in the area including one in Canandaigua and one in Newark.

If the limited Ithaca flights work for you it is actually a very nice newly renovated airport and the town itself nice and walkable with a lot of restaurant choices. For waterfalls in the Ithaca area you actually need two days if willing to walk/light hike a bit. Taughannock Falls, Buttermilk Falls, several falls in Robert Treman park, and don’t miss the falls on the actual Cornell University campus:

Head down to Corning for the glass museum then either stay there or in Watkins Glen and visit Watkins Glen State Park and the Shequaga falls just south of there right in Montour Falls.

Continue north along the West side of Seneca Lake where there are at least a dozen wineries, several very good and the view is nice. You could stay the night in Geneva or a bit west in Geneseo and the next day visit Letchworth State Park with several worthy waterfalls. https://parks.ny.gov/parks/letchworth

From there maybe 2-hour drive to Niagara Falls.
